Level limit in BG:EE?

I was wondering what the maximum level is for single, dual & multiclassed characters is in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition?

If I remember my Dungeons & Dragons Lore, the level limit is 20? Although I read in the documentation that the level limit will be higher in the sequel than in this game... so does that mean the sequel will allow characters to level to higher than 20, or does Baldur's Gate; Enhanced Edition have a level limit of less than 20?

The xp cap is 161000. To find out what level that corresponds to see here:
    http://www.playithardcore.com/pihwiki/index.php?title=Baldur's_Gate:_Progression_Charts

Remember that for multi and dual class characters, xp from all their classes counts towards the total.

Edit: This cap is for the main BG:EE campaign. The Black Pits has a higher cap, I'm not sure what it is.

Is the XP cap for the whole party or per character?

Ooh! Thanks! I thought the cap was general!

I've been playing in The Black Pits and my characters have gained more than 161000 Experience. Is this a bug?

Okay, just so I get this right, according to the chart provided above and the level cap of 161000, I can only get to level 8-10 depending on my class unless I remove the cap manually?

Yup, at least for a single class charcter. With a multiclass, you'll probably end up something like 7/7 or 7/8.

Mmkay, thanks for the reply. I'm only around level 4-5 and I can definitely feel the difficulty slope evening out a lot more. Just that that cap seems really low to me for some reason... =/

It'll probably end up working itself out later on though. First time playing through if you haven't noticed... :P

Yeah, I know what you mean about the cap seeming low, as you can end up hitting level 5 or so pretty quickly, making it a bit dissapointing that you can only look forward to a few more levels throughout the rest of the game. It'll slow down a bit because of the geometric growth the XP progression, but you'll still end up easily hitting the XP cap before the end of the game, even with a full party, if you're doing a thorough playthrough.

The XP cap is a funny thing, even if you dump it completely you'll probably only gain one more level which really won't break the game. I think in the original game it had as much to do with not adding more spells or class abilities as anything, but since they're using the BG2 engine now all that stuff is present and there's no physical reason for it.

Back to the OP's question, BG2EE will take characters up above level 20 in most cases. And just like the PNP rules that later added a supplemental book for higher level characters, the BG2 game design will add some new abilities for higher level characters. Your characters will literally get to be god-like by the end; it's kind of fun, even if it does look a lot less like PNP AD&D by the end.

^ only one or two levels if you run with a full party. If you go solo you get 6x that experience ;)

Yeah you're right, I rarely adventure with less than four, so I don't generally think of that. It will have a far bigger impact on those who want to solo.

I think the max level is 11 since my Druid is at 250,000 xp and not moving

Black Pits cap is level 10. It's not by XP, so some classes will gain more XP than others.

The XP cap is 161000. From that (and our friends at www.playithardcore.com), we can surmise that max level for each class is...

    Single:
    Fighters and Barbarians - Level 8 (125000xp)
    Paladins and Rangers - Level 8 (150000xp)
    Thieves and Bards - Level 10 (160000xp)
    Mages and Sorcerers - Level 9 (131000xp)
    Clerics - Level 8 (110000xp)
    Druids - Level 10 (125000xp)
    Monks - Level 8 (110000xp)

    Multi:
    Fighter/Cleric - Level 7/7 (64000/55000xp)
    Fighter/Thief - Level 7/8 (64000/70000)xp
    Fighter/Mage - Level 7/7 (64000/60000xp)
    Fighter/Druid - Level 7/8 (64000/60000xp)
    Mage/Thief - Level 7/8 (60000/70000xp)
    Cleric/Mage - Level 7/7 (55000/60000xp)
    Cleric/Thief - Level 7/8 (55000/70000xp)
    Cleric/Ranger - Level 7/6 (55000/36000xp)

    Triple:
    Fighter/Mage/Thief - Level 6/6/7 (32000/40000/40000xp)
    Fighter/Mage/Cleric - Level 6/6/6 (32000/40000/27500xp)

    THEREFORE A:

Fighter->Cleric can dual at level 6 and still hit max Cleric level
Cleric->Fighter can dual at level 6 and still hit max level Fighter
Fighter->Thief can dual at level 3 and hit level 9, one shy of its max
Thief->Fighter can dual at level 6 and still hit max level Fighter
Fighter->Mage can dual at level 2 and still hit max Mag level
Mage->Fighter can dual at level 6 and hit level 7 Fighter, one shy of its max
Fighter->Druid can dual ar level 2 and still hit max Druid level
Druid->Fighter can dual at level 7 and still hit max Fighter level
Thief->Mage can dual at level 3 and still hit max Mage level
Mage ->Thief can dual at level 7 and hit level 8 Thief
Mage->Cleric can dual at level 6 and hit level 8
Cleric->Mage can dual at level 7 and hit level 8 Mage
Cleric->Thief can dual at level 7 and still hit level 8
Thief->Cleric can also hit level 7/8
Ranger->Cleric can dual at level 6 and still hit level 8
Cleric->Ranger can 4 and hit the max Ranger level of 8

-Of all the Fighter-based multi and dual-classes, only F/M/T, F/M/C, and Ranger6->Cleric8 lose out on the extra .5 attack per round. R->C also lose out on one 1st level Ranger Spell

-A single, multi, or dual-classed Cleric will never be able to cast 5th circle spells. A single and dual-class Cleric only gain +1 4th circle spell over any multi-class combo. Fighter/Clerics gain an extra .5 attack over all other Clerics

-A Fighter->Thief can have a X4 backstab multiplier. A multi-class Fighter/Thief will only ever get a X3 but gain an extra .5 attack per round

-Only single classed Mages and those that dual at level 2 can gain 5th level spells. Multi-classed Mages lose out on one 3rd, 4th, and 5th level spell. Triple classes-Mages lose out on one 2nd, one 3rd, two 4th, and one 5th level spell compared to a single class

-Ranger/Clerics and Ranger->Cleric gain access to Druidic spells at all divine spell slots, however Cleric->Rangers only have access to regular Cleric divine spells

    That's not quite right e.g. mage/thief can reach levels 7/8 (60,000/70,000), as can a fighter/thief 7/8 (64.000/70,000) and a Cleric/Thief 7/8 (55,000/70,000).

Just in case I have my calculations wrong. What level could a Fighter/Mage/Thief achieve in BG:EE? And a Fighter/Mage/Cleric?

I do not recall having read many stories about folks taking the triple multi-class through the saga. Have I simply been surfing the web with my eyes closed, or do these classes suffer too much from the XP split?

@Tyranus I think you may want to re-check some of those numbers. In addition to errors in your multiclass section (as pointed out by @Oxford_Guy), a number of points in your dual class section are incorrent. For example:

-A fighter can actually dual to a cleric at level 6 and still get to max cleric level.
-A fighter can dual to a druid at level 6 and still reach max druid level.
    - You say that only single classed mages can get 5th level spells, and that multi/duals will always have less spells less spell slots, when in reality a character that duals to a mage can get just as many spell slots (including 5th level), provided they dual early enough (such as Fighter 5->Mage 9).
    -etc.

Although there is still a disadvantage to a mage that wishes to dual early - you can't dual to a specialist mage, so don't get as many spell slots because of that. Also you have to have a minimum of 15 strength, and the points may be better used elsewhere, unless you roll aloit to get a good score. Lastly, you have to be human, so don't get the elf THAC0 bonuses with swords/bows, 90% charm resistance, possibility of 19 Dex etc., or the Gnome Con-based save bonuses and possibility of 19 starting Int.
