@tl1942 No, no its doesn't. Rolling a die for chest contents takes me right out of the game. Its pretty telling that some of the first comments after random loot was mentioned asked when the roll happens so it can be save scummed. Which is what I will end up doing if it doesn't kill my interest entirely.

I'd say random loot is better suited for IWD where you have a lot of magical weapons without distinct backstory. Or when you have played the game so many times that you are tired of metagaming.

Not when you don't get any magical weapons you don't proficiencies in. There's too many non-choices in IWD.

That really shouldn't be an issue here. I've played IWD enough to know *exactly* what you are talking about. As I had mentioned before, not very much is randomized. Some spoilers to my approach:
For the most part, the IWD items I added in are what's randomized, and for the most part it's 50/50 between one item or another. And in many cases, its a roll between items of the same class, say for instance: You start a new game and make a b-line for evermemory at the friendly arm inn. Well, it might be that, or you might just dig up Kontik's Ring of Wizardry.

I did it this way to avoid a very specific problem: over-itemization. If I had just tossed in all this additional stuff without some sort of check and balance, the game would have been rediculously over-itemized in my opinion, and from the outset, I wanted this mod to be balanced.

Another thing I randomized, item appearances. I'll give an example:
Dragonscale Armor. Some folks, like myself, tend to prefer it have a chain appearance, others leather.
So, in my mod, you got a 50% chance of either. I did something similar for dragonscale helms. Same exact stats, but different appearances. It was a way for me to offer variety and replayability without ruining being able to plan out a run.

Lastly, I know some folks like to run mage-heavy, and initially, there were very few options to obtain the scrolls for the new spells added in the mod. Now, since the update, there are far more places they can be found, and like many scroll drops in the game, some are randomized, between the level 1-4 scrolls and the level 5-9 scrolls. This way, you get more chances to get what you want for your mages.

Keep in mind.... none ofd this is written in stone, and ya never know what a future update might bring

@StummvonBordwehr "No matter what, it’s your call; "
No arguments here. My feedback may be blunt, but its not my mod.

@Daeros_Trollkiller I can get behind more scroll diversity. Don't take any of this personally, equipment randomization is a very specific and very strong pet peeve of mine.

No worries, I don't take it personally at all, there was a time I felt the same as you.

Daeros, I am still catching up on updates. When 2.0 is installed on BGEE alongside SCS with its IWD spells component and it appears that I have Faerie Fire as a level one and level two spell. Not a huge problem, just something I did not expect. I did not dig into the rest of the spellbooks. The component in question in your mod appears to cover spells and items for IWD. Any plans to make items and spells into distinct components? Apologies if this has already been done for 2.0.1 or 2.0.2, I haven't tried those yet.

All of the examples of the Faerie Fire spell I checked before implementing it in this mod have it as a level 1 cleric spell. That being said, my mod checks to see if a spell with the name CLERIC_FAERIE_FIRE is already present in the spells.ids before it installs to prevent duplicates like this. I'll have to look at SCS to see how it handles adding spells to see if it uses a different spelling, or if it checks to see if a spell is present before it adds it. Depending on how SCS does it, I may be able to avert this specific issue with an additional check.

No plans to separate the items and spells component, for two reasons: Several new items' effects have dependencies on them, and most are completely new and original, not from IWD.

I would advise using 2.0.2 of my mod as it contains the most up-to-date components and fixes.

Daeros, it appears that I installed your mod, then SCS, which likely does not check for existing spell names, and would account for the duplicate in the spellbook. I'll make a note to install your mod after the IWD SCS components.

I can't play BG these days without the Randomizer mod, but I use the option to randomize without losing items so that I can still find all the pieces for Cromwell (can't play without the classic Item Upgrade mod either). I have not tried your latest mod on BG2 yet with the randomized loot setup. Do you have any information on how the Randomizer mod would interact with your randomization logic?

I've not tried it, so I can't say for certain, however: If randomizer only moves around existing items then it should be fine. My mod focuses around bringing in items that don't already exist in the base game.

My current understanding of the EET item randomizer is that it only changes vanilla item locations/contents. Quest items (vanilla and modded) and mod items are unaffected.
  • stewelementstewelement Member Posts: 51
My specific worry is that randomizer scripts would interact poorly with the loot drop logic of this mod. For example, Carsomyr may get randomized to be part of the Shade Dragon's loot instead of Firkraag's when the Randomizer mod does its thing (either via Weidu or in-game scripts when a new game starts). Now, I haven't played with the 2.0 version on BG2 yet, but my understanding is that Daeros' mod will look at Firkraag's loot and potentially swap out another similarly tiered item for Carsomyr. Should the randomization happen, then Daeros' mod kick in when loading Firkraag's lair, which on paper at least seems like a potential conflict. I suppose the worst case is that something that randomizer put in Firkraag's horde is replaced by Daeros' mod, and would be the same overall effect as Daeros intended. I have not attempted it on an install to test it for myself (yet).

Consoling items in is your backup plan.

@stewelement - I've made a note for myself to check into this for the next update and see if I can come up with a workaround for it.

for the SCS mod, I just took a brief look at the install files and I don't see where it adds in Faerie Fire. I'll have to take a closer look for the next update as well.

***update*** This was bugging me, so I did a clean install of SCS's IWD spell components on a clean install of BG2EE - I checked both the spells.ids in NI, and created a new cleric (and mage as well, just for good measure), and I am not seeing Faerie Fire at all, so either I am really missing something, or SCS doesn't add this spell, and I am not sure what's causing the issue with this spell appearing twice for you.

@Daeros_Trollkiller regarding Faerie Fire, I did some research, and it is actually Siege of Dragonspear that adds the spell to level 1. I have no idea where the level 2 spell came from, and that particular install has been replaced due to other issues. Probably a botched install on my part.

Hi, thanks for creating this, it looks amazing!

Albeit I can't get it to work with my Mac Steam install. When running the command I get

    "/Users/phil/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Baldur's Gate II Enhanced Edition/setup-sod2bg2_iu.command: line 3: 11757 Killed: 9 "

Any help would greatly be appreciated!

Sorry to hear about the trouble. I must apologize, but I have zero experience with troubleshooting this on a mac, nor do I have one to test on. Please post this over on the Gibberlings 3 forums, and hopefully someone more mac-savvy than I can chime in :)

@Daeros_Trollkiller Maybe there's something that I'm missing here.....but Potion of Mirrored Eyes is a BG1EE item.

In BG2EE, it's supposed to be a (super rare) random drop, most probably so that everyone doesn't use it to cheese beholders (not that there isn't other convenient beholder cheese solutions....).

So where are we supposed to get the 2x Potion of Mirrored Eyes to upgrade the Buckler of the Fist +2?

Great mod. Thanks again for it!

I was wondering where the acid-etched dagger is in BG2? It's not listed in the locations part of the readme.
(Just curious, really, as I'm now in ToB and had been hoping to upgrade my boomerang dagger but never managed it.)

I also should mention that the "force import" option of SoD items (the items that BG2EE is supposed to import) has never worked for me (I use a mac if that's relevant). It's not a big deal as I can add those items via the console, but I thought I would mention it in case it's helpful for a future update.

There are two available for purchase on The Concoctor via Neera's quest line.

Pai'nai in the crypts, Graveyard district. You have a 50% chance of getting either it, or the Element's Fury instead. Both can be upgraded using the boomerang dagger.

Unfortunately I do not own a Mac, so have no way to test or diagnose the issue. I can say that you must start a new game *after* installing this mod for it to work.

Yeah, all games were started after installing the mod (and all other mods). This happened on two different computers, two different installs.

Again, it's not a big deal (the items can be entered manually in their proper locations using the console). Just thought I'd mention it.

Ah, that explains why I never found it. That region is overridden by a component in the "Unfinished Business" mod. I'll have to keep this in mind for future games.

I notice it says that the Aster's Edge might replace Carsomyr, have you made it not the case if the player is a Paladin for the Stronghold Quest, or is the Aster's Edge eligible to also complete it?

So it's Carsomyr OR this sword? Randomly? When is this decided or should I just console in the sword I actually want?

I was really liking this mod before finding out that it can randomly remove Carsomyr from my game.

Is there full documentation for this randomness somewhere? I specifically decided to go kill Firkraag early and get Carsomyr. It would be cool to avoid these disappointments in the future.

Yes, it's a 50% chance of getting either Carsomyr or Aster's Edge. It is determined when Firkraag is killed, so if you don't get the item you want, you can reload a save and try again. This information is available in the location spoilers link on the download page. I did update the paladin stronghold quest to allow it to be completed using either sword, so you won't run into an issue of not being able to complete it. The reason I implemented it in the way I did is to allow for more variety in a playthrough, and offer a one-handed "holy avenger" option. I know some folks don't like random drops, but for the very few I put in the mod, most are a 50% chance, or a 33% chance, all of which can be rerolled by reloading a save. For enemies that have a randomized drop, it is determined when they are killed. For something in a chest/drawer/barrel, etc... it is determined during your very first visit to the area in which it is located.

Firkraag was actually quite hard for my low-level party with SCS, so it looks like I'm sticking with the longsword or consoling in Carsomyr.

I would like to point out that there was already a one-handed "Holy Avenger," the Purifier +4. Arguably more complicated to obtain, but yeah.

I noticed in the readme that the Reaching Ring in the Harper Hold is actually replaced by Kontik's ring 100% of the time. Did you just do that because there is another Reaching Ring?

If I recall correctly, yes, that was the reason why. I set out with goals of variety, and replay value for this mod in that you simply can't get everything in a single playthrough, choices have to be made. Ironically enough, every time I see posts like yours, it tells me that I achieved exactly what I set out to do

    Hiho,

I play your Mod on Version 2.5.17.0 (BGEE) and only used the Component to implement IWD Items into BG1.
It appears that like it was in stewelement's case i now have Faerie Fire as a Level 1 and Level 2 Spell in my Spellbook.
They also have different Icons. Functionally they are absolutely identical. When i click through the Spell Information Menu It only shows up as a Level 1 Spell though. Could it be a conflict with LeFreut's Enhanced UI Mod???

I provide what i installed with Project Infinity.
