I used to have guinea pigs. They do squeak... quite a bit actually.
I have never actually had a hamster, but I have heard they have a reputation for being kinda mean. Other, less pleasant things too... like cannibalism. They are mostly nocturnal so expect them to sleep all day... To be completely honest, I think that there are plenty of other small furry animals I would get before I considered a hamster.
Hamsters are greatly skilled at making tons of noise all night long. Be forewarned. I'd recommend a rat for a rodent pet. Very smart and can be quite affectionate. I have a soft spot for hedgehogs too, never owned either sadly.
Skunks and rats, eh? XD Sadly, I'm allergic to mouses... and many other animals. Hamsters, rabbits, and cows are on my safe list. Cows are too big (awww :c), rabbits sound too advanced to start out with, which leaves hamsters. n.n I may look more into rabbits again.
I considered getting a rabbit in the past. Never did get one, but I went so far as to look up some info about their care. They didn't sound all that difficult to me. I recall that there being a few minor difficulties to them, but nothing insurmountable. I think many of their behavioral issues can be solved by getting them spayed/neutered. Also, their inability to regurgitate can cause serious issues with hairballs and colic, but pineapple juice has an enzyme they lack that can break up the hair so you can give them that to solve that problem.
Also there is a type or breed of rabbit called 'rex' that has the softest, most pleasant feeling fur I have ever encountered on any animal. It would be my choice if I got a rabbit.
A lady I used to work with had a giant Angora rabbit. When it's fur was combed out, it was the size of a standard pillow. I called it "Bunzilla". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kd8-QzPxUmI
