It shouldn't make any difference. Try using just the game's .exe (baldur.exe) rather than the launcher. It's what I've done and it works just fine the times I want the steam overlay. (View Post)

Then just add the .exe to your steam client. Games -> Add a Non-Steam game to My Library... on top of the client. Works just fine. (View Post)
