Turning on Expertise during combat is a pain

Playing online and I'm finding enabling Expertise/Improved Expertise during combat is very flakey. Sometimes it comes on, more often it seems it doesn't and you take a dirt nap, very frustrating.

Is there some trick to getting it working reliably? If I spam the button it'll come on and then get turned off again. I hit it once and sit there waiting for it to enable but a lot of the time nothing happens.

    You can activate it before entering combat instantly and then click a target to engage without it going off (though if you move anywhere else by default it'll turn back off). Otherwise only press the activate button once, all the various combat modes (expertise, power attack, rapid shot, flurry of blows and parry) only activate at the beginning of your characters combat round so if you were part way into the round it'll have to wait until the current round finishes to activate before the next one begins.
