Trying to kill Shandalar, but he gates

Im trying to kill him solo, but as soon as he runs out of spells, he just gates.
Does it spose to be like that? Can i encounter him later?
Is there even a way to kill him in 2.5?
Oh and this is my first time playing BG EE.

    I THINK the only reliable way is to use several Wands of Paralysis simultaneously until one sticks, and you need to save scum. You MIGHT be able to swarm him with traps too, I've never tried it.

    I think solo fighter is kinda screwed on trying to kill him, maybe Darts of Paralysis?? Really hard to get that to stick. A solo cleric would be even MORE painful, having very limited tools to work with.

    Anyways, if you're soloing, make sure you make a save game before starting any big boat related quests in Ulgoth's Beard, because the one can be a doozy, and might not be doable solo for you, so you'll want to have a save from before you go anywhere with it.
