Dual Class Questions

Ok, so the old class is "inactive" once we dual. How many levels above the original class do you have to achieve before both Classes become active at the same time?

Do you gain proficiency slots in the new class as you go up in level?

Which THACO is used once both classes are active?

Thanks for your input and patience.

    1. One level higher than the original class. If you dual at 5 you need secondary class at 6. If you dual 3 you need secondary class at 4.

    2. Yes and no. Don't put pips into the same weapons as your old class as once you regain your levels the game will use the higher pips instead of combining them. However if you have fighter as a base, once you have regained your levels the pips earned by whatever you're leveling can be used towards grandmastery.

It's actually possible to hold leveling up for a while and only do that once you've reached enough exp to activate your old class and spend the pips however you want at that point (only worth it if you have a fighter base).

Do bear in mind that if you dual into a cleric or druid this will also lock your possible weapons into what they can wield so if you had points in axes for example they'll just be lost.

    3. The better one

(In somewhat more detail, composed before the other replies went up)

You reactivate the old class as soon as your level in the new class is greater than your level in the old class. For example, two of the dual-class companions in BG2 are Imoen in the starter dungeon (thief 7-mage 8) and Anomen (fighter 7-cleric 8). Both have reactivated their original classes already, and are at the minimum level to do so.

Yes, you gain proficiency slots as the new class does. Anomen, for example, will get new proficiency points when he reaches level 12, 16, and 20. While the old class is inactive, your proficiency choices are restricted to what the new class can do, limited by any ethos restrictions of the old class. After the old class is reactivated, you open up its options as well. For example, if you take Imoen to level 5 and then dual-class her to mage, your starting mage proficiency must be one of the four mage weapons. Your level 6 proficiency, with the thief class reactivated, can be any weapon or style a thief can learn.

When both classes are active, base THAC0 and each saving throw are whichever's better between your two classes. For example, a fighter 9 has base THAC0 12 and saves 8/10/9/9/11. A thief 13 has base THAC0 14 and saves 10/8/9/13/9. Combine the two, and a fighter 9-thief 13 dual has base THAC0 12 and saves 8/8/9/9/9.
The same principle applies to multiclasses; choose whichever's best between your active classes.
