Does Beamdog client allow user to specify individual game's installation path?

I want to install BGEE at a location other than $program_files. I may want to install future games with Beamdog in another location.

I would certainly expect so. Not giving the user control of the installation process is often a hallmark of a worthless program.

Steam puts all games in the steamapps directory.

Steam is very community-oriented in that it detects what games you're playing and allows you to share them with others, etc. Don't see a need for this here. Essentially you just need to be able to download a self-extracting file and then take it from there without any further Beamdog involvement.

I like the concept of a steam-like client (i.e. Beamdog) because it will take care of updates and new content for me. If the game has that intrinsic capability, then that's great. If not, I hope the client allows me to configure the installation path of each game.

Yeah, you can specify installation directory. I think there's a few free games on the site if you want to try it.
