why is there so many games with 1 player and it's password protected and there is no one joining it for hours/ever

1, people don't realize that you can make your own team in single player and are still doing it the multi player route ( don't recall if this feature was implemented in v1.3, so if lots of players are still using that version, then the could be a possibility )
2, perhaps they are just waiting for hours for their team mates to come into the game, so in the meantime one of the players is just bumbing around for that very sake
3, could be that no one is actually playing the game itself ( which i have found happens quite a bit ) where people just leave their games open ( i guess they do this to make it look like they have more game play hours? kind of weak if you ask me )
4, it could be a mix of the above 3 to some degree
