[Classic BGT role-play run] The Cantankerous Predicament of Raven and Sevyred

AndreaColomboAndreaColombo Member Posts: 5,525
Introduction.

This is a classic BGT run in which I'll chronicle the adventures of siblings Sevyred (F/M) and Raven (F/T), born of the same mother though only Sevyred was born of Bhaal.

Sevyred is what you would describe as "book smart", though his emotional intelligence compares unfavorably to a halberd’s. He's introspective and aloof, and he enjoys long moments of silence in which to reflect and recollect.

Raven is the yin to his yang: a rascal whose good looks and way with words are the reasons she gets away with her shenanigans and ... ehm ... her liberating bystanders of personal items that are unnecessarily weighing them down. It's called wealth redistribution, you elitist pricks.

Both raised with Imoen in Candlekeep, they share a bond that would be lost on onlookers, shadowed as it is by all the teasing and mocking that notwithstanding subsume under their brotherly love, of which they are the unlikely manifestation.

Parerga and paralipomena.
Yes, I'm quoting Schopenhauer. Sue me.

This is a reprise of an older play through I stopped narrating after clearing Tazok's bandit camp. Those of you who read it on the other forum (which I wouldn't expect to be many, if anyone at all) will recognize the chapters I've already written as they're repeated here with minimal adaptations. Original content will start after the clearing of the bandit camp.

Narration will be in the present tense from the point of view of Sevyred.

I'm running a sizeable stack of mods, of which I'll provide the log in spoiler tags underneath for the more curious readers. Some of the highlights include:
  • Content mods like Unfinished Business and Almateria's Restoration Project.
  • Convenience mods like BGTweaks and Tweaks Anthology.
  • The mandatory fix & feature mods like ToBEx, ToBEx AfterLife, Improved BG2 GUI, and BG2 Fixpack.
  • Aesthetic mods like Infinity Sounds, Infinity Animations, 1PP, and TutuGUI.
  • Sword Coast Stratagems which kind of goes without saying.

...and of course my own Miscellaneous Tweaks mod (which I published in the General Modding subforum, should anyone be interested—there's stuff for the Enhanced Editions too.)

The idea behind the aesthetic mod choices was to recreate the look and feel of classic BG1 as closely as possible; a shift to the BG2 UI (and possibly BG2 spell incantations) will occur upon transitioning to that portion of the game.

Chapter I: Leaving Candlekeep, or of the unlikely predicament of Raven and Sevyred

So it appears we're leaving Candlekeep today. Father's distressed like I've never seen before and looks over his shoulder like he fears impending doom could jump him any time. I must say, I'm worried. Did he forget we're in a thick-walled fortress in the middle of nowhere that requires 10,000gp's worth of books to visit? How many such books can there be in existence? I'm afraid the old man might be getting senile and dementia catching up with him.

Regardless, he's adamant that we need to leave stat so Raven and I are to bid everyone farewell, buy what provisions we can, and haul buttocks. Imoen's gonna stay behind and she's been complaining all morning about it, her incessant whining giving me a migraine of tarrasque-esque proportions. Helm knows I love her but boy, is she a handful at times!

Anyway, here we are strolling through Candlekeep's fine pathways to Winthrop's Inn and all of a sudden a stranger approaches me in a steady gait and asks who I am. Like, I'm the guy you've mistaken for someone who wants to do conversation. Who the heck are you? ...aaaand that's a dagger in his hands. Yup, serves me right for being rude to a stranger. I can feel Raven's sigh as she draws an arrow from her quiver and bullseyes the guy before he can shiv me tender.

What was that about, though? People are not allowed weapons within the walls of the fortress and that guy didn't look like someone who could afford the entrance fee in the first place.

All right, let's get some shopping done before Gorion comes for us and zaps our nethers with a lightning bolt; he got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.

And who the heck are you, dear sir? Is that another dagger? Were you looking for the other chap who attacked us out of the blue? Questions destined never to be answered, apparently, but thank you Raven for once again having my back. She would normally rain snarky remarks on me like a dark and stormy night, but I can see these two lunatics have her just as worried as I am. Something's way, way off today. Let's grab our stuff quick and get the Nine Hells out of here before a knife in my back starts to twinge and turn.

Off we go, Gorion hastening his pace like he's on a quest to shed the extra weight from a particularly lavish meal I know for a fact he didn't have. Raven's following us from a distance; she's always been better at stealth than me—and Gorion, well ... let's say elegance and dexterity were never his best features. Father stops us cold; we are in an ambush, because why not? After two attempts on our lives in a single day, why not end it with a teaspoon of assault and battery?

Big guy in an armor looks pretty buff and he's asking for me by ... qualifier, I guess? He just called me Father's ward. Very anti-climactic. He's after me and didn't even bother finding out what my name is. Is there no standard anymore? Raven grabs me by the arm and pulls me away right before the woman behind the armored guy can pierce through me with a flaming arrow. Time to run for our lives while Father unleashes the pyrotechnics.

The sound of battle lingers on, growing ever distant as we run away from the ambush site without looking back. I know Father can rain fiery hell like few others in the Realms so he's gonna be fine. He has to be fine. He can't leave us now. We have nowhere to go and need his guidance now more than we ever have. Please, oh please be fine... My train of bitter, hopeful thoughts comes to a halt as the running gets to me and I fall to the ground, my consciousness slipping away as I helplessly reach for my sister. I close my eyes right as I see her fall right next to me.

Chapter II: The dawn is especially cruel this morning

As my eyes ease open, I stand up and take in my surroundings. It takes me a while to catch my bearings, and it looks like Raven's in a similar predicament. She looks every bit as bewildered as I am. We weren't caught, quite clearly, but Father's nowhere to be seen and we're alone in the wilderness, short of the precious tomes that would be required to make our way back into Candlekeep. Not that it would do us much good, if Father was so keen on leaving. So what do we do now?

    Heya, it's me, Imoen!

She was supposed to stay in Candlekeep, so I've been wondering when she would show up. She's teary-eyed and her smile can't conceal the sadness in her stare, which can only mean one thing—the one Raven and I both know, and both refuse to admit to ourselves or each other. Well, at least there's three of us now—except it's more like two babysitters and a toddler, given Imoen's age. Yeah, stop giving me the stare, you're a toddler no matter how hard you punch my arm. You're only proving my point.

I guess the next logical step would be to try and make our way to the Friendly Arm Inn to meet the friends Father talked about before we left. Except we don't know how to get there, so it'll take some trial and error—not that we'd have anything else to do or anywhere else to be.

Moving north, we run into a suicidal chap who's about to jump off a cliff because he lost a thrice-damned diamond:

    cgOPSe2.jpg

It takes a recently orphaned pair of siblings to tell him there's much to live for. Maddening. Good to know about the diamond, though...

So after helping our fellow Chase choose life, off we go toward the Friendly Arm Inn. Somehow we can't seem to walk two steps without everyone and their neighbor approaching us with something—a most peculiar predicament considering we're armed and all people seem to talk about lately are bandit raids.

First we have an extrovert hermit who lost everything to the iron crisis and elected to forever wander the woods—and apparently approach random armed strangers without a care. Guess his misfortune made him suicidal too but he lacks the guts to jump off a cliff like our friend Chase, so he just talks to randos in the woods in hope to find bandits who'll do it for him.

A hurried messenger who needs to convey a message to the dukes of Baldur's Gate seems to have enough free time to waste his breath on three people who CLEARLY aren't the dukes of Baldur's Gate.

Xzar and Montaron offer us potions in exchange for moral blackmails which compel us to let them tag along. Well played, but I'll take your potions thank you very much. Oh, and lo and behold! There's the diamond Chase lost. A shame he's already gone and we have no way to track him down. It is with a heavy heart, and a heavier purse still, that Raven takes it for herself. Except none of the former and a metric ton of the latter.

Onward, and two more strangers think we must be interested in their chatter. Like, "Hey, let's take a stroll through the woods and see if I can find someone to talk to. I'm... so... ronery... So ronery.... So ronery and sadry arone..."

So we've got the geezer with the ridiculous pointy hat who acts like he has a point to make but really doesn't, and a guy who says he's hunting yet has the fearful eye of a prey. Meh. What does everyone want with us?

And it gets worse: as soon as we set foot within the walls of the Friendly Arm we suffer the third attempt on our lives in less than a tenday. Yesterday I was nobody, raised in a secluded fortress with little human interaction but my sister and Imoen; today there's a bounty on my head addressed to all "those of evil intent" (smooth; real subtle.)

Anyway, with Khalid and Jaheira agreeing to travel with us, we can ditch Potion Guy and his Sketchy Underling and keep the potions because no refunds. Sayonara, suckers. Time for some R&R, which in Raven's case means robbery squared; and what juicy tidbits she learns from the inn's guests:

    iFRSdEk.png

I needn't to tell you it didn't take long for her to find just the magical treasure the uptight dweeb was talking about.

Time to head south to investigate the troubles at the local mines because well, we've got nobody else but Khalid and Jaheira and that's where they're headed so might as well...

Chapter III: On the way south.

Beregost welcomes us with the all its bells and whistles. The Friendly Arm did too, in a way, except it was more like spells and wishes—specifically that said spells wouldn't zap me dead. At least here no one's tried to kill us yet, and a local villager was kind enough to direct us to the Jovial Juggler to rest our sore feet. We share a mug and some conspiracy theories with the locals before nighttime:

    quUYS00.png

And what day would it be without some lunatic vomiting his blatherskite on us?

    VsbiZye.png

    Yeah, good talk.

While we rest Raven visits a number of townsfolk abodes in Beregost to relieve them of their material possessions, that they may not weigh them down on their path to enlightenment and ascension. Because We Care (TM). People don't seem to mind; in fact some of them even see her as a merry do-gooder:

    p0GbJEJ.png

I mean, she's a stranger who's just barged into your place uninvited but sure, she can keep an eye out for "anything" that may even remotely be related to your husband whom we don't know and have never met.

On our way south we are attacked by a pair of ogrillons because we are, and I quote, "pipsqueaks." We make short work of them and not 50 meters down the road we are approached by Flaming Fist mercenaries who accuse us of banditry. Like, where the heck were you when those ogrillons attacked us? Great law-enforcement work, guys. Anyway, our patience for shenanigans and hubris has worn thin by this point, so we make short work of the mercenaries too. Their suits of armor look a ton better on us anyway.

We once again can't seem to move a step without the entire Sword Coast taking an interest in us of the aggressive kind. A group of hobgoblins picked a fight with us just because we passed them by. I mean, look: you've clearly got a thing going on here, sitting by a campfire and telling each other horror stories about yo mamas' face. Far be it from us to interrupt your fun. Why would you put an end to both your sloppy storytelling and your otherwise uneventful lives to attack us? Whatever, they had it coming.

Are we in Nashkel yet? (If had a gp for every time Imoen asked that, I'd be lord of thrice-damned Waterdeep by now.)

Chapter IV: Nashkel at long last.

Time to take a rest at the local inn—but wait, we must first handle another attempt on our lives by an individual "of evil intent." How many of these are there gonna be? Can we set foot in an inn without someone trying to kill us for a change? Sheesh, not a minute's respite. I can't even get a decent night's sleep because all the shite I've gone through recently took a toll on my subconscious and gave me weird dreams.

    xHEdNIK.png

As though trouble at the mines weren't enough, the Nashkel community is in distress because the former captain of the guard seemingly went on a rampage out of nowhere and left after killing his own family. The local priest says it's an exorcism situation but that's what priests say about everything:

    7AJQdf1.png

To me, it sounds more like a "not my problem" situation. The mines, on the other hand, are all the rage—especially with Jaheira nagging the rest of us about it nonstop.

This woman's worried about her husband who works at the mines and asks us to find him:

    rdDYnIO.png

I'm sensing a pattern here. But before we get there Raven wants to—ehrm, get acquainted with the town and its populace.

You'd think despite all the trouble that has befallen them lately, peasants would at least take solace in their bucolic surroundings. You know, they live in a house, a very big house in the country; it's like an animal farm, that's the rural charm in the country. But no, the whole place's so bitter not even the beauty of its natural landscape can untwist their mood's panties:

    311LVC8.png

To Raven's delight, what Karp's plow choked on was a big fat pearl alongside a suit of ankheg plate armor that probably belonged to some adventurer who perished long ago on this very soil. Guess the peasants won't need either of these and we're more than happy to ensure their precious tools of the trade don't break any more blades on them. To her greater delight still, the local bounty hunter appears to have the shortest sight this side of the Cloud Peaks and mistakes her for some other guy:

    WqKx0rT.png

Pleasure doing business with ya, sucker.

Since the town's merchant offered a lofty reward for a winter wolf's pelt, we'll be off to the Cloud Peaks next to see if we can fetch ourselves some easy money. It may be a detour from our main objective, but those mines aren't going anywhere and we welcome anything that helps us not to worry about where our next meal's gonna come from. Thing is, while we have to put in effort to locate the wolf, morons and halfwits seem drawn to us as effortlessly as moths to a flame. Is there an annual gathering of dimwitted weirdos we didn't know about in the area?

First, a dryad wants our help to protect a tree from two guys who clearly don't know left from right:

    XgwNz1f.png

and Helm forbid she'd lift a finger to help us in the fight. Skin's too delicate?

    hfBxPFQ.png

Then we run into a motley crew of creatures who spew nonsense before walking away, leaving us to wonder what the phuck that was about:

    mzau20Q.png

And that's not even the punchline! Get a load of this guy:

    HKyty8j.png

Were you repeatedly hit on your soft, undeveloped baby skull as a newborn? That's two of you against six of us and we seem to have our wits about us a lot more than you do yours, buddy. You do the math. Well, what do I know? Their math was so wrong they're now a number of feet under the ground they can't phucking count.

    MRU3afW.png
    Hey, look! A waterfall—how scenic!
Ew, no, it's got a dead cat in it.

At long last we find the wolf and skin it good for its pelt. We make a pretty penny from it, so the moron parade was not in vain. Plus, we get to share a mug of ale with the most renowned storyteller of the Realms while resting at the Dragon Belch before heading to the mines:

    kaCygfU.png
    8vGlGOA.png

Even the troubling situation down at the mines sounds fascinating coming out of this man's mouth!
