Importing items from SoD > SoA with a self made party

If you have more than one character to import, are items imported from the final save only imported from the main character, or are they imported from all the characters?

All characters that you import. The way it works is by checking your party's inventory just before that inventory gets deleted, during the cutscene sequence before you get control.

Note that for the three item groups imported from original BG1, you only get one each. No matter how many characters you import, there will only be one weapon on the table, one armor that Ilyich is wearing*, and one accessory in that other room.

    * Back in 2.5, there was a bug allowing multiple copies of the same item to be imported, which could allow Ilyich to get two copies of Fallorain's Plate. I'm pretty sure that's fixed in 2.6.

Thanks. Do you know if it needs to be worn or in the inventory, or does it not matter?

Either worn or inventory is fine. Not containers, though; the items have to be out in the open. Importing is a shallow look at just the characters, not the depths of the save folder where the contents of containers are stored.
