backstab requirements

.....If a thief is hidden/invisible, does his attack automatically qualify as a backstab? I know the wiki says that the thief must also physically maneuver themselves behind the target, but I'm pretty sure I recall years ago getting a backstab without doing that.
.....Now, mind you this was a number of years ago, with a really early version of the game ...1.3 was it? I am sure mechanics have significantly changed since then. I just want to verify what the current mechanics are.

When I recently played a thief in Black Pits, he could backstab only from behind! 👈

For the player, you need to be invisible and behind the target. Creatures you don't control - usually enemies - ignore the facing requirement and just need to be invisible.

There is an HLA that makes every attack in the next round a backstab. Paired with time stop trap, one pip in two weapon proficiency, Kundane, Belm or one of the two awesome throwing daggers, or a combination of them, plus Improved Haste, hmmmmm, nice. There are areas in ToB I have wiped out with my solo Bounty Hunter like that.

Must be invisible otherwise and must be behind, ah ish. Definitely not in front of thought. You can even backstab those that see through invisibility as long as you are behind and invisible.
