How would you do a trio?

How would you build a trio of CHARNAME and two of the NPCs?
Which class should CHARNAME be?

Well.. I am perhaps a little close minded, but I hate having a party without a thief.
And i hate being without my siblings.. I feel the story just doesn't work without them.

    So.. perhaps a Half-dorc Fighter/Cleric

I have a soft spot for Yoshimo, so perhaps keep him around first part of SoA.

If we're being flimsy about it and say 3 max at any given moment, but can rotate then err..
Fighter/Cleric, Imoen (Safana in SoD), Dynaheir for BG1
FC, Yoshi, Neera pre-Asylum - drop both for Keldorn before departure (->Imoen+Keldorn) (->Imoen+Bro) for BG2

I don't like being restricted to blunt weapons, even if they often are the best available regardless of type, but there's no other possible way to get Divine spells when doing a trio for me, because i need my siblings. (I suppose some kind of Druid or Shaman would be possible.. but meh. Maybe a Shapeshifter just for fun? Imoen can cast enchanted weapon, so the +2 standard for greater wolfwere shape wouldn't be that much of an issue.. regardless, F/C suits me better)

I could perhaps persuade myself to drop Neera, Keldorn and Bro for keeping Aerie through all of BG2.
Her power is just off the charts once she gets past 2.25m xp, which shouldn't take long in a trio.
In which case the FC might be any class really.. Cavalier comes to mind, F/M, F/T.. the possibilities are endless once you pick up Aerie, because she covers 2 caster classes, Imoen is a thief and mage.. so it'd make your life easier to be something tanky, but anything would work.

I like Cavaliers though.. I really do.
But thief HLA is often just too much fun to pass up on, so F/T, Berserker->Thief or even an FMT triple class or Blade is on the menu.. or Swashbucklers - they ain't got too many tricks and buttons to push, but you sure get a lot of thief skill points and they become very decent melee fighters, so with all the micromanagement that comes with Imoen and Aerie, perhaps a Swashbuckler, F/T or Cavalier is the way to go..

Geez look at me derailing myself.

Naw.. I'd go Half-dorc FC and stick to the Imoen 'n Bro idea.

I’d also never go without Imoen. I did BG1 once with a Cav, a single-class mage and a fighter/cleric… Plus Imoen. So not actually three.
And that was a long time ago, my last 20 or so runs I always do six. I like the NPCs.

Would probably go with the multi class characters, since you will get tons of XP using such a small group. Likely a multiclass or dual class protagonist too. Jan, Jaheira and Anomen seem like the base mould for such a party, from a powergaming perspective imo. You just swap in your protagonist for one of those three. Widest coverage of possible gear with those as well. Access to nearly all spells, just no necromancy wizard spells. That's for a good or neutral aligned play.

Evil would be much trickier. Again the mould that could give you the widest coverage is probably Dorn, Hexxat and Edwin. Dorn allowing you to use most cleric-aligned items and scrolls, giving you some divine casting. Obviously, one could instead just do a solid multi class protagonist to cover thief and maybe cleric or mage, allowing you to use the strong single-class evil companions like Korgan or Viconia.
