Duel classing Imoen & myself to mage status

I was just wondering when would be a good time to duel class if at all; I'm a lvl 4 Fighter and Imoen is lvl 5.

If dualing Imoen, I usually do this at level 5 or 6 (and *only* put thief points into find traps and open locks) and use Safana to cover for her whilst she's levelling back

If you want to maximize your Mage levels, dual your Fighter at Level 5 (You will end up as a Fighter 5/Mage 9), and dual Imoen at Level 6 (She'll end up as Thief 6/Mage 9).

Keep in mind both characters will be total sissies until they gain their Fighter and Thief levels back.

Although they'll still have all their previous HP, so aren't *that* fragile

They won't be fragile but they will be terrible at fighting. Mage THAC0 and Mage APR. Yup.

depends. for fighters, I'd go at level 3 (weapon mastery), though that would make him somewhat fragile - but with the addition of Stoneskin to the game (according to the manual at least), the more mage levels, the better.

for Imoen, level 4 is the ideal, even just to get crossbow proficiency for light crossbow of speed, and it also gives okayish thief skills. (are master thievery potions in the game? I can't even recall.)

what remains to be seen, however, is whether can we dualclass to specialist mage or not - a thief/transmuter Imoen or a fighter/illusionist dual charname would make me one happy player :)

Nope in terms of mage specialisation the only dual is to generic mage, and the only multi is gnomes to illusionist/thief. Everything else is generic. You can start as a human kit mage and dual out, but not the other way around. This is in the new manuals.
