How does multiplayer work story-wise?

So i'm in a unique situation of being able to replay the best RPG of all times in coop with my girlfriend lol. I was wondering how does it work - only the main character (i.e. the first one created) gets to do all the talking with NPC? What about banters, does only the main char get them? Is it possible for the secondary player char to get banters/romance et cetera. Otherwise it's just not going to be that much fun for her i guess, and definitely not a full BG experience.

Any character can talk with npcs.

That's nice =). What about NPC-initiated banters, romance and stuff like that. Do they only do that with main char or with both?

I don't know. I'd assume it work both-ways like with the other.

It used to work only with one player in the original game, which is the main player which is the protagonist/gorions child.

The conversations go as they always did, and being no romance in BG1(dunno if they added it, don't remember seeing that anywhere) you don't have to worry about that, but if it was there it probably wouldn't let anyone but CHARNAME talk to the person.
