multiplayer over AT&T 3G/data network?

My girlfriend and I are having a hard time creating a multiplayer game. Both of us are using iPads on AT&T's data network. The one hosting will get our external IP using google or "whatismyip"

Is this possible?

In my experience, mobile data networks have too much latency and instability to comfortably play most multiplayer games. AT&T's network is by far the WORST, at least in my area.

It should definitely be possible, but your time would be better spent setting up wifi or hijacking someone else's.

I have the luxury of my own network at home, but she doesn't and wont for awhile. Where I live AT&T is by far the best (low ping, 42mb down LTE), but where she is, it's very poor.

Sadly, we cant make a connection. It just sits there saying "joining selected session"

This is what we are getting.

I am hosting from a dedicated internet provider, I have the proper port open. This is what she gets.
