Dividing scrolls and party build

I play an evil party consisting of Kagain, Imoen, Montaron, Xzar and my thief character. I'll dismiss Imoen when I can sustitute her. I'd like to add Edwin as well and maybe Dorn. Xzar have found a number of scrolls. Do I have to divide them between Xzar and Edwin?
Any advice for building the party to last thorugh the game and maybe transfer to BG2.

Might as well ditch Imoen now, if your PC is a thief AND you have Montaron. More experience for everybody!

Adding Edwin and Dorn would round out your evil group nicely. Dorn is a ridiculous offensive powerhouse, and a lot of fun to have around. You will, however, have to split scrolls between Edwin and Xzar, which reduces each of their power a bit. I personally don't like having more than one arcane caster in BG1, and you're missing a priest. Perhaps you should get Viconia instead of Edwin, or get Edwin but have Xzar killed off to keep Montaron around.

Regardless of what you decide, don't sweat the transfer to BG2. Not sure if you've played BG2 yet, but there's a set canonical party that the game assumes you had at the start, and as I understand it Beamdog's contract won't let them change that for BG2EE. The only influence your party in BG1 might have on BG2 is a continuation of Dorn's storyline, as I expect they'll transfer over your experiences with him to BG2.

    Thank you for your input!
Being a noob, I actually don't know what an arcane caster is! I was thinking of making Xzar a necro/cleric. Bad idea? And when does Montaron get points as a thief?

Sorry, I'll clarify. The two types of spellcasters in BG are arcane and divine, which essentially means mage-types and cleric-types. Mages, specialist mages, wild mages, and sorcerers are all arcane. Clerics and druids, and higher-level paladins and rangers, are divine.

You can dual-class Xzar to Cleric, sure, but you'll need to find a tome to permanently increase his wisdom to 17. I personally would rather just recruit a cleric, unless you absolutely can't justify killing off Xzar. (And you'd have to kill him, since kicking him out causes Montaron to leave as well.)

Montaron is a multi-class fighter/thief, meaning that he levels up as both but has his XP split between the two. He'll get thief points every time his thief-half levels up.

Ah, I see, thanks for clarifying! So Both Xzar and Edwin are arcane casters. I like Xzar just because he's a necro (and totally whacked!), seems very appropiate for an evil character to me. Now, does it really matter for the game which one I choose? Is conjurer/Edwin better than necro/Xzar or is it up to gamplay and preference?
I see the point of not splitting Xzar in two!

Edwin is the better mage. He has an amulet that gives him an extra spell slot per spellcasting level, meaning he can cast several more spells per day that Xzar can. Also, Edwin is a Conjurer specialization, which means that all he misses out on are divination spells, which aren't particularly necessary. Xzar has an inferior spell selection and fewer spells per day. Xzar does get +2 AC over Edwin from Dexterity, but Edwin gets +2 hp per level over Xzar, so that's a wash.

Keep in mind that dual-class isn't the same as multi-class, and wouldn't "split Xzar in two". If you dual-classed him early, you'd probably wind up with simply a slightly XP-light cleric (You wouldn't be able to cast mage spells while wearing a cleric's armor), and if you dual-class late, you'd miss out on Xzar's mage spells until late in the game.

    Get rid of Imoen.

While I prefer xzar's crazy banter, Edwin is, I think, the more powerful character. Put the gauntlets of dexterity on Edwin and his AC is much better but there's no permanent fix for Xzar's constitution or his inability to cast mirror image or other defensive illusion spells, which he can't use as a necromancer. I don't recommend dualing Xzar to cleric. If you want to keep Xzar, make sure he learns Wraithform (level 3) and Stoneskin (level 4).

I highly recommend Viconia as the cleric for an evil party. Actually, I recommend Viconia as the cleric for every party. She is immune to half of the spells that enemies cast on her or your group, before a saving throw happens. That often means that when you get hit by a fireball or are confused and everyone's messed up, Viconia's fine and able to heal or dispel people. Viconia has by herself saved my party on many occasions and no other character has the magic immunities that make her great.

Xzar and Imoen had an "accident", Edwin and Viconia added. Feels quite nice actually!
