Selling items (in this case an emerald)

in New Players (NO SPOILERS!)
I'm trying to sell a jewel to a temple keeper and I'm having trouble again. It is selectable so it does not look to be blacked out or redded out in any way. If i click on it or double click it I get nothing. I am under the buy / sell tab within the transactions. I've clicked on the character that is holding the item, and trying to click it or highlight it or get it sold and to no avail. Do only certain vendors accept certain items?

    Yes, certain merchants will only buy certain items, but usually non purchasable items are darkened in your inventory.

    Is it possible that you were in the steal tab?
