New Players (NO SPOILERS!)
So I have my portraits in the Bgee file in my documents but they show as a question mark. When I put them in a portrait file they dont show at all. WTF

Pictures must be in 24-bit BMP format. JPGs and PNGs will not work.

i've never used custom portraits myself, but as jalily said the format is an issue and i also believe they need to be a specific size.

Large: 210x330 (not really necessary, so don't worry if you don't have it)
Medium: 169x266
Small: 54x84

On a related note, what is the purpose of the 210x330 size (L)? It doesn't appear to have any application, or am I missing something?

210x330 is used for the ToB epilogues.

Non-24 bit bmps have worked for me before, but the color might become slightly messed up when displayed in the game.
