Anyone else having this problem?

I'm trying to play multiplayer with a friend and at a loss of what to do after many failed attempts. When he hosts, we can manage to get in game as long as he doesn't give me control of any characters. So basically I can watch him play solo. Once he gives me control of someone, it crashes. After fiddling with ports and firewalls, we managed to allow myself to have one character successfully for a few test movements and chat relays. Once I opened a chest though, I dc'ed all over again.
Conversely, when I host, he can't even join my room without dc'ing.
I've tried to join other people's rooms but when I upload my character it just hangs and says that I'm still "creating character", even though I'm in the chat lobby.
I'm using a wired connection and even tried turning off windows built in firewall (I have no other security program), but nothing seems to work.
Any advice?

    seems like ur computer is having trouble receiving the internet from the modem its either the cord or your router if thats where ur cord is ran from
