Ending Minsc's quest timer

in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
A question came to mind about this that I don't know if I've seen answered. The question is: what condition ends his quest timer? Is it reaching the Gnoll Stronghold map, or is it actually saving Dynaheir?

    I've had him leave right after arriving on the map before, so just getting there won't do the trick.

    I've had the same situation as @jackjack. He badgered me a bit, I travelled from D'sTower and he left as soon as we got there.

    Edit: I assume that otherwise you could exploit by just travelling there and then clear off somewhere else... Which would be a bit rough on the big, loveable lummox.

    The quest timer will only end once you talk to Dynaheir for the first time.
