in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
and then he ran away! Will he come back? Or did I just send a child to his death? Will this ruin the quest?

    Leave the area, come back, and speak to Amanis. (Do this -- and pretty much every other side quest -- before finding Daxus.)
