Cross-Platform Multiplayer with Steam?

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
So if I get the steam version of BG2EE (which only has windows) will it be able to play with the Mac version from Beamdog? It says cross-platform on the steam site, but I'm just not sure how accurate that is without a Mac version also being on steam.
