The Thief Situation is Still Driving Me Crazy

Imoen - Awesome, but unavailable for big chunks of the game. Generally comes back under-experienced compared to your party.

Nalia - Thieving points spent horribly and not enough of them. I think her personality is fine but it bothers some people.

Yoshimo - Awesome, but unavailable for most of the game. Also "wasting" experience points bothers me.

Jan - Mechanically good but annoying personality.

Hexxat - Only makes sense in evil parties and not even all of those. A few Mary Sue alarm bells with her character.

Charname dual to thief - Forces me to be a human. Forces me to backstab since I can't dual to Swashbuckler kit ( and it would be overpowered if I could).

Charname dual from thief - Forces me to be a human. Lose out on lots of HP. Lose out on exceptional strength. Lose out on kits for main class.

Charname thief multi - Forces me to not be human. Forces me to backstab.

i hear you, and I think many people do. BG2 is no BG1 as thieves are concerned, but still there are ways you can avoid or reduce any annoyances you are experiencing:

    - Imoen->Yoshi->Imoen follow each other perfectly on the BG2 timeline. The amount of XP points you'd waste on Yoshi and/or miss on Immy can be minimised by going to Spellhold asap (and doing various sidequests in Chapter 6 instead of Chapter 2).

    - your argument of the game forcing you to be human if you dual or non-human if you go multi sounds a bit academic to me: the game does leave you the choice, as such you're not limited to any particular race.

    - if you use a savegame editor you could also edit another NPC into a thief (multi), for example I've often turned Viconia into a Cleric/Thief which not only solved my thief problem but also fits her character and lifestyle on the surface. For a good character, Valygar could work as a Fighter/Thief (or more fitting even Wizard Slayer/Thief).

    - you could also install one or more mod NPCs. For example Alora and Tiax from BG1 (complete with banters) can be used, or Dace Linton (a Bounty Hunter) who can join your party once you escape from Irenicus' dungeon.

I know there is no real solution to this and I'm mostly just venting. The problem is caused by a combination of AD&D rules, the number of locks and traps in the game, and Bioware's oversights when creating NPCs.

Rushing Spellhold is a good idea, except it makes most of the sidequests too easy when you do them in Chapter 6.

NPC mods and save game editing are just that, mods and tweaks. I can do them but I wish I didn't have to.

in the same boat myself the lack of thieves in bg2 is infuriating

as some one that doesn't like to mod excessively its awful that your only real choice for thief is to play it as a pc.

Immy is awesome but to limited in respect to thief skills and availability

Jan's thieving skills are really good, so I go him. Having to choose between Nalia, Jan, or Yoshimo sucks. Hexxat's only really an option for good/neutral parties if you are willing to throw role-playing out the window.

The thing is pure vanilla thieves are rather subpar compared to other classes :
    - a low level dual thief (like imoen) brings you all the thieving skills you will ever need
    - traps are fine but are very difficult to use without cheese
    - same for UAI

Therefore i don't think i would chose a pure kitless thief in a group (i don't do it either in BG1).

However, it would be have been great to have an assassin or swashbuckler because these 2 kits remain useful through the whole game

Thieves aren't that great single class in the long run.

basic thieves are not good but the kits are very strong.

The assassin is and remains a very powerful mage killer with poison weapon.

At high levels, the swashbuckler is as powerful as a fighter/thief, if not better :
with belm and scarlet ninja to, you have 4APR (8 with improve haste), all with +8THACO (same thaco as a pure fighter) and +8 damage.

I don't see why power level even comes into it despite what people are saying. The thief is a quintessential class to be BG and yet goes completely unrepresented for a lot of players. Its power level shouldn't be a factor, even if it were they could just make it a kit and the problems would be solved.

Thieves represent a style of gameplay you just don't get in bg2. Sure Imoen has the skills you need to get by but that's not the point at all.

They aren't? I think they're the only class besides arcane casters I might be capable to complete TOB solo with, thanks to UAI and traps. I'd have more difficulty with single class warriors.
I agree that multiclass thieves will be (even) more powerful throughout the game.

Well I wouldn't say completely unrepresented. Jan is a fine thief throughout the game in spite of him being a multiclass. His specialist school has great synerrgy with his thief class, both from a roleplaying perspective and practically. He won't be the best backstabber without buffs/items, but that's just one possible aspect of a thief. He makes for a good scout and a good mechanical thief e.g. I agree with you though that for example the Warrior - Rogue ratio in BG2 isn't balanced.

I don't play solo so I don't know about that. In a group though it seems their contribution (in battle) is minimal.

I understand. Unless built as a highly damaging backstabber, most thieves won't do much more in battle than attacking with a bow or other ranged weapon. They're fairly good at it though thanks to high DEX. Sswashbuckler being the exception here.

backstabbing for 186 damage + poison...useless? That guy is still alive?!?!!? sandthief ring and BAM another 100+ damage and now death.

it's not minimal if you're wiling to micro with the backstab (and invisibility potions, for the most time) and buffs.

i don't use much buffs and i don't like hyper-microing (feels the same way as kiting) so i don't use thieves other than fighter/thieves (thief class for detect illusion, set trap, occasional backstab and most importantly uai)

Thieves are definitely still limited in BG2 even with the addition of Hexxat.

In regards to your comment on wasting exp on Yoshimo, it is worth pointing out that Nalia, while her skills ARE horribly placed, is competent enough to open every lock/disarm any trap until you get Imoen back, if you are willing to micromanage ring/potions with her.

Her stealth capabilities are irrelevant because she can use illusion spells, and her backstabbing, while it will never be strong, can be made less terrible with spells.

90% of my playthroughs she functions just fine as the lone thief in my party until I get Immy back. (I don't like Yoshimo or Jan, and I haven't played with Hexxat yet.)

Like Itstucktwice mentioned with Nalia just stalk up on Potions of Mind Focusing, Perception, and Master Thievery (as well as ideally getting to chapter 3 as soon as possible for the Ring of Pick Locks) and she should be fine. Gorch for instance in the docks sells 8 Potions of Master Thievery (and you can buy them and find them elsewhere as well), most temples sell Potions of Mind Focusing, and Potions of Perception can likewise be bought in a number of different places. For instance with a single Potion of Mind Focusing and the Ring of Pick Locks she'll have 100 in pick locks and 95 in Find Traps. Plus she can use Luck to boost it by 5.

If I had to guess I'd say that in SoA you can probably buy around 24-27 Potions of Mind Focusing from temples alone (I think every temple in the game has them, and when they do they have 3, though there may be a few who don't).

She requires more maintenance than say Imoen but considering the availability of potions to help her she really isn't that bad.

I'm not sure and I can't check now, but Mrs. Cragmoon in the Bridge District (western part) sells various porions of power and potions of master thievery.

Thief question from a noobie - has anyone tried using a Swashbuckler as the main tank for a party? I hear that they get pretty nice defensive bonuses as they level, also bucklers/small shields.
  • SharGuidesMyHandSharGuidesMyHand Member Posts: 2,580
I've always felt that bringing back Shar-Teel as a fighter dualed to thief would've gone a long way toward addressing the thief issue in BG2 - however, like Hexxat, you'd still have an NPC that would probably clash with a good-aligned party.
  • SharGuidesMyHandSharGuidesMyHand Member Posts: 2,580

You've basically hit the nail on the head here. Thieves basically serve a niche role in BG2, but it happens to be a very crucial niche - so while you suffer for not having a thief in your party, you also suffer from having one in your party, since they'll always feel like the weak link in the chain (even Yoshimo IMO, even though he has probably the best stats of any thief in either game).

The simple truth is that the game needed more multi-thieves like Jan - this way, they could serve a function in addition to just being thieves, and (unlike dualed thieves like Imoen and Nalia) they'd still be able to add more points to their thieving skills as they level up.
  • GoturalGotural Member Posts: 1,229
Yes because Thief is a bad class in itself, however it synergises very well with others classes in a multi or dual.
  • OutsiderSubtypeOutsiderSubtype Member Posts: 10
It's true that it is possible to muddle through with Nalia, but it's tedious micromanagement and to disable all traps she needs to be under the influence of multiple potions. There needed to be more single-class thieves or thief multi-classes. The trouble is there are already too many elven NPCs and humans can't multi-class.

Running without a thief isn't an option. Traps often deal 50+ points of damage or force save or dies.

True story - for over a decade I thought there were no real thieves in BG2, given Yoshi's fate and Nalia/Imoen never advancing their level. I never realized Jan was supposed to be the answer, as I found him so annoying I never took him out of the government district, and never made the connection. Jan is the thief we are supposed to use, hence he is neutral and has an excess of dialog to reward us for taking him - as long as we share the sense of humor of the game authors. I feel foolish in hindsight, and resent having such an annoying character forced upon me, but he still remains the only real choice for good parties wanting a thief that is not the main PC. At least he is still new to me (for now!)

Jan should be in the cannon party. Charname (fighter dualled to mage at the start of Bg2 due to Irenicus experiments awakening his powers) Jan, jaheira, minsc, yoshimoen and a last spot to rotate between other characters
  • luskanluskan Member Posts: 269
All of Jan's custom gear kind of threw me off so I never bothered to kept him in my party. So what's the best way to utilize him in terms of equipment, weapon/thief proficiencies and combat?
