Saving Throws

So, I'm still learning about BG:EE and all it's good stuff. I'm also learning more about D&D style games in general. So my question is my Druid has 6(-3) against Death. I know that the 6 is how high I have to roll to save. (so from 6-20 on a D20)(any lower means I failed) what is the (-3) that appears after?

The -3 is how much that saving throw is being modified from its normal value. So you have items/effects active that are improving your save vs. death by 3.
