This is yet another inconsistency with item descriptions, then: some list the item name, and some others don't. How do we want to deal with it?

I propose to only include the name in the description if it is a unique/ legendary item. In these cases, we'll drop the +X tag both in the tooltip and in the description.

Descriptions of common items don't specifically include names, so your proposal sounds perfect to me.

String 24065 includes a name (Durlag's Pride) but no description. A legendary item with no description doesn't look too good, does it? I'll drop @Dave's name in case he felt like adding a few lines ;) In the meanwhile, I will remove "Two-handed sword +1" from its name.
  • AndreaColomboAndreaColombo Member Posts: 5,524
Oh, and at this point I would remove quotation marks from the items' proper names: I see no reason to keep them.

Added a line to the second post in this thread to account for the way item proper names will be treated, then.

Speaking of items: according to Wikipedia, "ninja-to" is actually spelled "ninjatō". Shall we ask @CameronTofer to add the ō character to the font and fix the spelling accordingly, or shall we just drop the hyphen and make it ninjato (the original game text reads ninja-to)?

Question for my fellow team leaders: Tooltips for armors are inconsistent, as they sometimes include the word "armor" and sometimes don't. For example, we have "Chain Mail" and "Chain Mail Armor", or "Splint Mail" and "Splint Mail Armor".

Either we drop the word "armor" altogether, or we use it in every tooltip (though keep in mind there are items that don't make sense without the word "armor" in their name/ tooltip, like "Leather Armor" or "Studded Leather Armor").

Shall we use the word "Armor" in all tooltips, or just in those that require it to make sense?

I will be scanning the text and adding any characters that are missing, so it's ok to use it on my end.

    @AndreaColombo

"Chain Mail Armor" is redundant, so I vote for "Chain Mail".

We need to check if "Chain Mail Armor" and "Chain Mail" are exactly the same items.

    My suggestions:

Chain Mail Armor -> Chain Mail
Splint Mail Armor -> Splint Mail
    Leather Armor
    Studded Leather Armor
    Splint Mail

    I am not sure about
Plate Mail Armor -> Plate Mail

@kangaxx - if we change all instances of "Chain mail armor" to "Chain mail", all relevant items will be named consistently :) Since the word "mail" already implies that it is an armor (according to Wikipedia), I would advocate that using the word "armor" in addition to "chain mail" and "splint mail" is uselessly redundant. Also according to Wikipedia, the term "plate mail" does not exist (source) and it should be rather called "plate armor". What shall we do? Keep "plate mail" for consistency with vBG1 and players' habit, or change it to the more accurate term? @Dave?

Therefore, I would drop it and follow your advice:

    - Leather Armor
    - Studded Leather Armor
    - Chain Mail
    - Splint Mail
    - Plate Mail (or Plate Armor)

I would ask @CameronTofer to please add the ō character to the in-game font. I'm still not sure I'm going to use it, but it's better to have it than to need it ;) What I'm going to do for sure is to remove the hyphen from ninjato, since it appears to be out of place.

I'm not sure about Plate Mail Armor and would prefer to wait for @Dave's decision.

According to Oxford Dictionary of English, mail is an armour made of metal rings or plates joined together flexibly.

To me a Plate Mail Armor is more inflexible so I tend to "Plate Armor".
  • DaveDave Member Posts: 200
Let's leave it as "plate mail" because in later iterations of the game there's actually a mechanical difference between "plate mail," "half-plate," and "full-plate" armor.

    @AndreaColombo

Do we consider 'Bastard Sword +1, +3 vs. Shapeshifters' (6740) as a legendary item?
If that's the case, I would change it to 'Bastard Sword vs. Shapeshifters'

@kangaxx - I was considering it a "normal" magical weapon, since the devs didn't bother giving it a proper name. However, if there is a majority that would consider it a legendary item, I will consider it so, too.
  • kangaxxkangaxx Member Posts: 681
    @AndreaColombo

What about ‘Two-handed Sword, Cursed Berserking +3‘ (6754)?

I'd nominate @Dave to make this decision.
  • AndreaColomboAndreaColombo Member Posts: 5,524
Yeah, I was going to ask about the Cursed Berserking thing.
  • kangaxxkangaxx Member Posts: 681
We'd call it 'Berserkerschwert' in German. What about 'Sword of Beserking'?
  • AndreaColomboAndreaColombo Member Posts: 5,524
The original Italian translation is Spada a Due Mani, La Maledizione del Berserker +3 (which kinda sucks).

Whatever @Dave decides is fine by me.

Isn't that Bastard Sword called Kondar?

I'd also give the cursed sword a name too. Cursed Berserking Sword could do, but something more spiffy would be better.

    One thing about Kondar too:

I think that the +3 to shapeshifters is a only a damage bonus, not a THAC0 bonus, but I'd need to check to be sure.

How shall we deal with legendary items that aren't weapons? Same treatment for their names?

    E.g.

    - Ring of fire resistance: 'Batalista's Passport'
    - Ring of free action: 'Edventar's Gift'
    - Ring of animal friendship: 'Druid's Ring'

    etc.
  • kangaxxkangaxx Member Posts: 681
I vote for the same treatment.

Ring of fire resistance: 'Batalista's Passport' -> Batalista's Passport
Ring of free action: 'Edventar's Gift' -> Edventar's Gift
Ring of animal friendship: 'Druid's Ring' -> Druid's Ring
  • TanthalasTanthalas Member Posts: 6,738
Honestly, I'd rather they use their Legendary names, but aren't there multiple rings of fire resistance and animal friendship in the game?
  • AndreaColomboAndreaColombo Member Posts: 5,524
@Tanthalas - if there are many, and only one is named "Batalista's Passport", then only the latter will be called "Batalista's Passport" and all others will remain "Ring of Fire Resistance" :)

    What about:

    - Studded Leather Armor +2 : Missile Attraction

I believe "Missile Attraction" alone wouldn't be clear enough. What say you?
  • kangaxxkangaxx Member Posts: 681
Hmm... my mind is doing backward loopings again.

I think we can keep 'Missile Attraction'. 'Batalista's Passport' or 'Edventar's Gift' ain't clear either, I'd say.

But they are actual proper names; "Missile Attraction" sounds more like an attribute to me, like "Armor of Missile Attraction".

  • kangaxxkangaxx Member Posts: 681
You've propably just found our solution: Armor of Missile Attraction ;)

Dagger +2, Longtooth has two names: Longtooth, and Grave Binder. How do we deal with this? We keep both and separate them with a comma?
  • TanthalasTanthalas Member Posts: 6,738

    Should just be one name.

Or perhaps "Longtooth: Grave Binder" or "Longtooth the Grave Binder".
