Degrodel - Potential Spolier?

in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
So I went back to Degrodel's house after having snuck past the monsters the first time to talk to him. I killed his pets upon my return and then he was red circle aggressive so I can't complete his quest. Anyway to take him out of the red circle so I can talk to him and complete the quest?

    Have you tried charming him? (and then using the talk button on him)

    Nope, but I will learn the spell and try it

    Worked, not quite"like a charm", but it worked
