Kindly Explain the Latest Updating & Patching Tech

So I read in a seperate thread that updating might not work for the DVD release of SOD as it does for the downloadable version.

I'm pretty clear on how GOG handles games and patching - you download the main executable install package, if a patch is released, you download and install that.

But I'm not really clear on Beamdog's system; I'm assuming that when the word update is used, it means it will update the installed game, but not the executable package previously downloaded?. So do you have to download the entire thing again to get the latest version?.
