Feedback: I feel like the drop location could be more clearly marked - if it was supposed to be a weak fault line, it would help to depict that visually in game. I know that making it obvious might reduce the dowser as a quest mechanic, but it seems a touch broken to begin with. My dowser gave me several wrong directions and - after I placed the barrel - the map suddenly displayed 3 different location markers. If there actually are three possible drop points with no visual indicators, then the dowser becomes especially confusing.
For the OP:
I placed the barrel at the west part of the map, just north of the river.
I had issues with this as well. What I think you need to do is wear the necklace, then stand still at the spot you got the "here it is" message until it repeats the message. Then move the cursor around until your cursor changes into a question mark, then click that area.
What happened with me was when I got the message, if I moved my character the spot "vanished." So I don't think there is a specific spot, rather just the general area. But it seems the prompt to put it down is a bit buggy and it can vanish if you move around after getting the "necklace spinning" message.
I had a hard time with this too, i thought i found it but ended up just droping it out of my inventory on a spot that it thought it told me too, needless to say i was disapointed when the dearf general told me it didnt blow up and go all pissy about it. Well maybe if his instructions werent so vague it woulf have went better.

Hope this helps!
They could also have a section of rock crevice reveal itself as a hidden container when Charname enters the area with the dowser equipped. Place the barrel in the container, get a confirmation message, and leave - concealing it inside a crevice or some other geological feature actually makes more sense from a roleplaying standpoint anyway.
I'll be honest I dropped the barrel then it told me it was useless as I didnt have the explosives. I did pick up a tinderbox but I couldn't find a use for that either... mayhap I missed something

The tinder box is used for an unrelated early game quest.
darn then I completely missed that one. It was bugging me perhaps on the next playthrough.
I believe it's used in the dwarven dungeon, though I can't remember for what. Don't quote me on that, though.
Don't you use it to light the torch in that unique encounter with the trolls, where you need to have darkvision/infravision to spot it?
THAT's where it was, yes. I remember now because I was playing a half elf and wound up not needing it.
You still need to use it to do the action in my previous post. The ability granting you access to do the aforementioned action has to be in your repertoir for that to happen though. (I really don't want to do a spoiler, I'm too lazy)

I guess my memory is just shot on this one - thanks for the detailed info.
Good job, I've spent so much time trying to figure this one out. Finally done it, thanks to you. Drop location should be marked more clearly definitely, thank you so much for info
