Melee Weapons

I've made a YouTube video on the basic melee weapons in BG:EE.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1NcbvEq944

Hopefully, people new to the game might find this useful.

The video is 6 minutes long and if you have any comments, suggestions, or differences of opinion I'd appreciate hearing them.

Thank you!

Speed doesn't do a darn thing unless if you want a weapon that do the strike faster...

Speed is somewhat relevant if you're kiting or trying to interrupt spells.

And even more so when you're using Poison Weapon.

Speed is vital. Try a quarterstaff with two handed weapon style character vs two handed sword with no style. The staff wielder can do a quick instantenous smack (effective weapon speed:0) and flee, and kite for a round so his attack becomes available again, before the sword wielder can even raise his sword (weapon speed:10). Rinse and repeat and the staff wielder will beat the swordman into a bloody pulp eventually.

Actually, a kensai or beastmaster with ++ staves and ++ two handed weapon is perfectly viable, and a very competent melee character if you do kiting and dancing a lot. The reach also helps, basically a short sword or dagger wielder can never touch this character if played right. Staff with two handed style is the king of weapons if played this way.

Getting the first strike is significant against opponents who are killed in a few hits (especially if they have strong attacks). It's less important against opponents who take longer to kill :) .

Lunar, I'll have to give that micro tip a go :). But, don't you feel bad having a Ranger use a quarter-staff? - given their natural skills with two weapons ;) ?

Thank you all for your comments so far.

If you enjoy playing that way that is..

Beastmasters can't use swords or daggers, and dual wielding clubs look silly IMHO. So a staff and bow are the best for a BM.

Oh yeah it can get a little bit tyring after a while, but you actually play it like a fps or platform game, keeping on your toes, and having fast reactions with your mouse or finger in case of tablets. It feels like you actually 'do' the fight, more engaging. With a regular tank you click once and watch the blood flow. Maybe flee or gulp a potion if it goes badly. With a fast staff you can dance and have fun taking down a statistically-better foe.
