Can they be helped somehow? Or should I just leave them there to wait for the enemy I just killed indefinitely?

    They should rush off to fight the Yuan-ti, but then they'll go right back to where they were once the level is clear. Nothing more from them, unless you want their stuff, but it's nothing super special.

    Apparently they are dopplegangers, you can't left them behind your back and alive.

    Actually, they *do* drops some nice loot, a particular Long Sword for example!
