Why did Edwin gain a spell?

in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
Edwin is in my group and dealt a killing blow to an ogre with his staff. There was a "level up" sound but what actually happened is that there was a message:

Edwin: Gained Spell: Larlock's Minor Drain


Why did he "gain" a spell? I thought all regular and specialist mages had to scribe their spells.

    When Edwin first joined the party, were you able to level him? In the EEs, when an npc joins you for the first time, if your party meets certain exp thresholds, they gain the spells the original games would have granted them upon joining. Because the EEs let you manually level the npcs rather than doing it automatically, you see the spells that are granted at the threshold.
