Assassin poison question

For the Assassin class, is Poison an auto-check every time the Assassin lands a hit? Meaning is Poison just an inherent built-in ability of the Assassin class regardless if the class has poisoned weapons or not? Or do you need actual poisoned laced weapons first? This is something I have never fully understood regarding this particular class so I was curious if there a chance to Poison enemies regardless of weapon type and regardless if any weapon is poison laced or not.

Or does the poison portion of the Assassins attacks need to be activated somehow? If so, how?

    You need to activate the Poison Weapon ability, and then any weapon damage you deal will deliver poison. Note, the ability has limited use per day and a fairly short duration.

    Edit: to activate, click on the star-looking button on the far right of the toolbar, then select poison weapon. You must have only your assassin selected though.
