Best internet modem router

Hi everyone!

Not sure where to post this so I think it belongs here. I had a nighthawk modem router and recently it failed, the Wi-Fi works but it won’t see Internet. Shop guy said it was stuffed so I bought an Asus AC55U. It literally lasted two days and did exactly the same thing. I’m taking it back for a replacement but was just wondering if any of the tech savvy guys had any input on this. For example, are combined modem routers not that good? Should I get 2 seperate units and link them? Any advice much appreciated.

    I use a separate modem and router. The modem is what the isp recommended for their network and the router is my own choice.
