Audio problems: voices don't play, or play partially

I've encountered a series of seemingly-related audio problems:

- In character creation, none of the male voice options play. You can click on them, but you don't get a preview or any sound. (I haven't tried female options.)

- A lot of ambient character voices do not play, or only play partially. For example, in Candlekeep, I hung around the chanting monks for some time. The circle around each NPC monk would turn white, indicating talking, but the audio files of their chants would only play a fraction of the number of times the white circles indicated they should be playing. When they did play, the audio was frequently truncated, with only part of the total file playing.

- Party NPC character voices don't play regularly. I frequently see NPC text with no associated sound at all. For example, I'll see the text for Imoen's "Yer all buffle-headed," but the audio file doesn't play, or only a fraction of it will play. The voice files for the new NPCs (like Neera) I've encountered, however, have all worked just fine.

- Voices play too softly regardless of my audio level settings. I set the voices in the game to play more loudly than music, combat, ambient noise, etc., but voices are consistently too quiet. (Except, as above, the new NPC volume seems normal and the files play completely.)

I'm running Windows XP.
