Can a Thief wear Elven Chain?

For some reason, I seem to recall Thieves being able to wear Elven Chain, despite usually only being able to wear leather armor, but I could be mistaking that from another game. Can they wear Elven Chain (without the High Level Ability "Use Any Item"), and if so, can they still use their thieving abilities?

It would be nice for a Thief/Mage to be able to wear Elven Chain in BG1...

Yeah they can use it but suffer a skill penalty (at least in the description). Elven Chain + Ring of Protection +2 is a good combination.

So, Drizzt's armor isn't technically Elven Chain? I guess that would make sense, since it was a big deal that it is now available in this game. And it's just a skill penalty, and doesn't grey out the Thief's skills like a Fighter/Thief wearing heavy armor?

Drizzt's armor is not elven chain. There is supposed to be a set dropped during Dorn's quest, but apparently that's bugged at the moment.

Is it necessary to include Dorn in the party in order to get to whichever area is required to obtain the elven chain (after bug fix, of course)?

@Philhelm As it is an encounter specific to Dorn, yes.

No, the question of him joining first comes up at the end of the encounter. And according to the item description it can "be worn by Thieves and Fighter/Mages with few restrictions".

Drizzt's armor was made by a Dwarf, not elves..it does allow usage of thief abilities, but not spell casting. But no thieves can't use it..bards can, but ...no spells makes it pretty lack luster and bards are supposed to be able to use pickpocket in ANY chainmail (but currently can't since I assume thief skills are hard-coded to block armor types)...says so in every description every where.

In the Pen and Paper game, thieves *can* wear elven chain, but it imposes some fairly significant minuses to various skills thieves rely on.

Just took a look at the .itm file (CHAN12.itm, btw)
    -10 move silently
    -5 open locks
    -5 Find Traps
    -20 pick pockets

Fighter/Thief can wear Drizzt chain, without any problems. And he still can use his thieving skills while using it.

In BG2 it was no problem, dualclassed mages and bards could wear them and cast spells aswell.
