Dedicated downloader crashes.

So I spent the $20 for this game despite the fact that I had seen so many problems with it on these forums. I figured I might get lucky. Nope.

I started downloading this game with the dedicated installer this morning at around 12pm. So far I've only managed to download 314mb of the 1.8gb file. That's after nearly four hours. Why? Because a.) it's slow as all get out even when it's working and b.) the downloader crashes every few minutes and I have to restart it each time.

I will not be recommending this game to anyone now because this is total bullshit. It's so sad that such a great idea has been foiled by such rudimentary mistakes by the distributor.

Have you checked the forums for the various fixes? There's a sticky about a patch coming very soon to remedy these exact problems.

Rythgar: The game shouldn't have been released until something as simple as being able to download it was a given. And yes, I've checked the fixes. Nothing has worked except for ending the process and restarting it (which, thankfully, the downloader remembers so I don't start from scratch).

Based on many of the posts around here I fear what will happen when I actually try to play the game if and when it does finally download. Like I said, I thought I'd get lucky because I never have any problems with such things and I'm aware of all the system requirements.

I feel that we are glorified alpha-testers here. Not even beta-testers. Hopefully my mind will change if and when this thing finally downloads but for now I'm extremely skeptical and I feel ripped off.

@cheq22 They are publicly offering refunds, specifically because of these issues.

@Rythgar In that case I have calmed down a bit. I just really want to play this game: it was my absolute favorite RPG of all time. I'll never forget installing Amn and the program telling me that it looked like I had a character already from the first BG and asking if I would want to continue playing him. I was floored. I'd never seen something like that. Of course I wanted to continue my character from BG1 but I hadn't any idea that would be an option.

Such great games. I look forward to playing them again. Hopefully this downloads correctly so I can re-live my teenage years... at least through Tales from the Sword Coast. And if this endeavor is successful maybe we'll get Amn, too.

Once again: thanks for calming me down.

@cheq22 Given the rapidity of the patch schedule (there has already been one, another announced) I have every confidence that 90% of the reported issues we've seen will disappear. I had downloader issues as well, but once the game started I had zero problems. Hopefully your experience is similar.

For a team of something like 13, that's actually not bad. I do expect them to have this hammered out and the BG2EE release to go much smoother, though.

@Rythgar: Fair enough. As I stated, I am calmer now. And also up to 1.1gb of the download as I type with no further crashes (knock on wood).

I also really hope this works out. BG1 and BG2 (plus their expansions) were the best RPGs I ever played. If I have to suffer a few hurdles to play the enhanced version, I shall. I just hope this doesn't end up being a waste of time and money. After all, I still have all my original BG discs and could just reinstall those if I wanted...
