I think those don't do anything, they're a scam for those characters to make money off you. But I may be mistaken, it's been a while since I got that far into the game.
A few are fake (and identified as such), a few are genuine and bypass traps and doors. If everything works ok, then it's bugged because you need one or two to go deeper into the dungeon.
I think they are all basically kind of fake. Have played through hundreds of times, I still dont know which ones though. I alway end up drpping them all anyway in order to carry more loot.

so true... i actually dropped all wardstones for loot at the lowest lv, and upon teleporting out I was afraid I had screwed up (dropping the wardstone that gets you into the lower levels *in* the lower levels), but I could go right back down again.
@ajwz@raelcari Now you can put all the wardstones in your gembags I proudly carry them as my trophees.
But gem bags aren't for using! They are for carrying around in your inventory pointlessly the entire game, while you promise yourself you will sort out your inventory after just. one. more. area. and then just randomly stumbling across a merchant and selling everything anyway
If I remember well, the wardstone prevents some of the traps from affecting you. One example is the "trophy room" on level 2, that has some traps, unless you've got a wardstone. (Not sure which one... http://www.forgottenwars.com/bg1/ar0512.htm) I had all 3 wardstones, and I didn't find any trap in that room.

But since it's a long time I have been in this place, I cannot confirm.

I have never had any trouble going all the way through Durlags Tower without buying those Wardstones!
