dual wield question

How is the dmg actually calculated? Does it switch between the dmg of your main and offhand for each hit?
Or does it use only the mainhand dmg?

You get one additional attack per round with the offhand weapon in addition to all of your attacks per round with the main hand weapon. So, if you already had 1.5 APR with one sword, dual-wielding them would give you a total of 2.5 APR.

SO lets say you get 2 attacks per round with 1 weapon equiped. then you add the second weapon, thus dual weilding. You now have 3 attacks perround (you get 1 extra attack per round with an off-hand equiped). So you hit with the main weapon 2 times and the offhand 1 time. all in 6 seconds. if it says 4 attacks per round dual weilding then 3 with main hand and 1 with offhand. The offhand will hit 1 attack per round (no more or less) and will always give 1 extra attck per round. Did that make sense?

The damage is calculated when each weapon hits. its not averaged or anything like that. main weapon hits, then calcutes for main weapon only. offhand hits, then calculates for offhand only.

This is why it's beneficial to put the most powerful weapon in the main hand. At higher levels, you'll have 2-3 attacks with your main hand, only 1 with your offhand. Rather have those multiple attacks be with Galactus' Crushing Hammer of Worldsmiting +5 than with the Barbeque Fork +1.

    Free Insightful for that one.

Ageed, look for things the offhand can do to help you or your main weapon, like resistance to fire or more strength, extra attack per round. etc Since it wont hit much.

Does ADnD and BG in particular use the "small weapons" rule thats in DnD3? I have seen no mention of it, and do not remember how it was in the PnP version.
In DnD 3 if you are dual wielding, the offhand penality is diminshed by 2 if you use a small weapon, so it makes sense to use a longsword and a short sword rather than . dual longswords. Is this the case here?

No, best you can get is 0 penalty for main hand and -2 penalty for offhand. There is an item in TOB that makes the offhand 0 penalty (rangers only if I remember) and its late in the game when you get it.

Since its a somewhat related question...
How does speed factor work into attacks per round? (Grand Mastery Fighters)
And does the extra attacks per round/speed factor from Grand Mastery effect the offhand at all? (does the damage also?)

Or is weapon speed factor something random like initiative?

Speed factor influences initiative, last I checked. A combatant wielding a dagger with a speed factor of 1 gets his poke in much more quickly than someone with a 9-speed greatsword.

I know that extra attacks through proficiency don't help the offhand, but other bonuses absolutely do. A quick offhand would just make the offhand swing happen earlier within the round, I believe.

To my knowledge, the only way to get more offhand swings in the BG games is improved haste.
