Lowering reputation without wanton murder

To be honest, I never liked the reputation system in Baldur's Gate. Why do all the bad guys care so much if we're doing the villain with a good publicity routine, everyone loving us even as we plot horrible things for the Sword Coast?

Anyway, because I'm the sort of a guy to help people for goods and experience, my reputation is starting to get pretty high, which the bad people in the party are getting a little iffy about. So I'm going to have to start thinking about reducing it somewhat.

Any ways to do this without slaughtering some innocents, or constantly kicking Dorn and/or Viconia out of the party and recruiting them again? Or console commands I guess.

I don't agree with the system, but if you want to lower reputation- why not kill innocents? If it is role-play reasons, have the EVIL party members do it (without your characters command). Perhaps they offended you? I know many nobles in BG1 are the most obnoxious little fudges I have ever read the dialogue of.

    Wanton pickpocketing I guess

There is a "Bardic Reputation Adjustment" mod that introduces 3 bards to the game who you can pay to spread rumours about how fearsome your party is thus lowering your reputation. It's part of the BG1 NPC Project mod, but that has yet to be made compatible with BG:EE.

I remember it. I used to have that mod, and will probably install it again once the whole modding business is made more simple.

I have an AI script (thanks to Cuv) with the following in that I use to reset my rep to 6 whenever it goes too far out of the range I'd like:

    IF
    HotKey(D)
    THEN
    RESPONSE #100
    ReputationSet(6)
    END

Seems a better solution than adjusting play style or constantly having to visit temples/bards to adjust (esp. as that usually means entering areas you will be attacked if you have too low rep).

There was also an interesting mod in BG2 named virtue, which made several changes in the reputation system. I doubt it will be made to work with BG:EE though.

I used to play with Virtue. It seemed to be buggy as all hell, though.

I prefer this method, indeed. Since I find the reputation system in BG greatly flawed and biased towards good parties, I prefer to simply ignore it. That script saves me from unnecessary mods and all the associated troubles.

I always used stealing myself - Imoen or my PC as a closet clepto who sneaks off alone and steals brashly in homes right in front of their occupants then stealths away when the guards are called.

It does however appear that many more doors are locked in BG:EE (at least in Beregost) perhaps limiting access to some of those options.

Lots of doors in Beregost were locked in Vanilla BG, as well. By memory, they're the same ones that are locked in BG:EE.

Well there have been changes in Beregost - the Firebeard encounter for one which I am contemplating making a topic for - I used to have Imoen or a PC thief raid every house in Beregost for early cash and don't recall so many being locked and/or being too difficult to pick with early levels of open lock.
