Caster Level Reduced/Improved by 1

So I was using Neera and got the effect 'Spell Caster Level Reduced by 2'. This was whilst casting spells. Shortly after the message 'Spell Caster Level Improved by 1' came up. Any ideas?

    Hm, I suspect the caster level was reduced for the specific spell, and then her caster level goes up again immediately after. Funny that it said "by 1" though. Was she level 2? In that case, it might be down by 2, to a minimum of level 1.

    So the 'Spell Caster Level Improved by 1' appeared when you weren't casting anything?

    Whenever a wild mage (Neera is one) casts a spell, her caster level gets a random + or -

    As @nellyniel says, wild mages get a random + or - to their caster level with every cast. Often this means nothing, sometimes you get 1 more or less magic missile than you'd expect, your chromatic orb effects are far from predictable and so on.

    For awhile Neera was casting magic and NOTHING HAPPENED. I'm like "Did she break? I should be getting level adjustments!" Then she cast sleep instead of magic missile and all was right with the world.

    I kind of assumed it was something to do with being a Wild Mage but didn't remember it ever happening in BG2. Is this a new mechanic?
