Do companions no longer talk?

One thing I noticed with the Enhanced Edition - I seem to recall companions saying things during the game, commenting on events and getting into discussions with each other. It's been a long time since I played Baldur's Gate so I could be mis-remembering, but there is absolutely none of that in the Enhanced Edition, except for the new conversations with the new followers. Were these removed? Buggy? Or am I just crazy?

BG2 had a lot more banter. BG1 is most silent by comparison.

I too remember NPC's randomly talking to eachother, but now I only get taunts from ONLY 1 NPC.

BG1 had no banters ,unlike BG2. And unfortunately due the contract limitation they could not add new banter, except for banter with the new NPC.

Are you sure there were none whatsoever?

I must have played with a mod that added them. Maybe it was included in Unfinished Business or something... I don't recall actually seeking out such a mod specifically, though.

Also, how do I reach Cloud Peaks? World map won't let me travel there ("yellowed" out, no way to get there from adjoining areas).

Yes.. except for very minimal banter like "We should go to Nashkel as soon as possible" or commenting each other sometimes, of course not talking about romances which does not exist at all..

NPCProject added a lot of banter, perhaps even too many IMO

My Coran tells Branwen that she is beautiful. (If that can be classified as banter.) My other companions for this playthrough are the new NPCs.

In BG1 my NPCs wouldn't banter in the same sense that they did in BG2, but they would grumble about each other on occasion. I recall Viconia and Kivan saying things about how much they didn't like the other one, and Kivan saying "May Viconia's black heart rot in hell," or something to that effect, when she died. I don't think BG1 banter came up in textboxes the way it did in BG2, but I definitly heard NPCs verbally talk to each other. They just didn't do it as often.

Once in Tutu I did have a conversation in a textbox come up between Quayle and another NPC (I can't remember who, but I think it was Tiax). I don't know if that was something unique to Tutu or if it was in the original as well, since it was the only time I played with Quayle.

Vanilla BG1 did in fact have banters between NPC's. Each possible pair of NPC's would have one banter programmed. They would stop suddenly in the middle of the street or while walking around and say the lines to each other. They were voice-acted, and they appeared exactly one time in each run.

If these have been removed, then that would indeed be a disappointment.

Actually, I think they're still there, because I got one last night, the one between Ajantis and Khalid:

Ajantis: You are an honorable man. I am proud to fight with you.
    Khalid: Why...uh...uh...th-th-thank you.

They are few and far between, so a lot of people don't notice them and/or never see them.

They will never speak directly to the PC, with anything, though, only to each other.

Kivan and Branwen compliment each other now and then. What surprises me is that Neera and Rasaad have said nothing to each other so far, never mind anyone else.

There are a few intraparty banters. They're usually limited to specific groups of NPCs though. Kagain and Yeslick have a couple, as do Quayle and Tiax (mostly about both pairs disliking eachother). Kivan and Viconia seem to get along.

Eldoth, Skie and Garrick have a love triangle, or so I hear, and Shar-teel's willing to chip in there as well. I've never been able to keep patience with these NPCs long enough to hear them though.

None of this is on a level with BG2 though. A mixed blessing I suppose. You've not got Jan's hyperbolic homilies, Jaheira's "advice" or anything at all said by Anomen. I love the BG2 NPCs kind of like family. A big, very dysfunctional family very in need of counselling. Some of it's pure gold, but keep Anomen away from me - best cleric in the series maybe, but I just want to take his all his gear and leave him standing in his shirtsleeves next to the Troll Mound.
