I feel I should point out that the artist who created the animations - or the bulk majority of them, at least - passed away in between the development of BG1 and BG2. It was for this reason that the animations changed for BG2.
That being said, it is not only possible but not all that far-fetched that the source assets were lost in the process of cleaning out that artist's belongings. Maybe they were lost in that process, maybe they were damaged, or maybe they're now in the possession of a loved one who doesn't want to part with them.
Crafting conspiracy theories about vengeful corporations witholding artwork won't serve anyone's needs; all it does is stir up ill will where there previously was none.
The artist's name was Daniel Walker, credited as "graphic designer" in the Baldur's Gate manual. Just so you know who brought you the art you (we) love in BG.
