You'll want to at least consider it at low levels. Especially magical ones. And to have a ranged attack. Nearly must in the early game when they're so flimsy.
Unless the target is immune to non-magical weapons, your fists are usually better even in BG1 due to the extra attacks. It's good to keep a backup weapon though.

I guess I have not been paying attention. You lose the extra attacks if you use a weapon?
I used a weapon until Rasaad got 2 attacks per round (5th level, IIRC). The benefit of a +1 to THACO with a wakazaki was not worth losing the extra attack.
For when BG2:EE comes out in in 2013 - your monk should be using a +4 weapon when fighting demi-liches unless he's level 25 or above. Just a FYI.
And yeah, there are situations where monks should use weapons. A weapon + 1h style is very useful in BG1 due to the very poor AC scaling of monks at low levels. A +1 scimitar and +1 AC bonus from 1h style is better than your fists for most of the game. Specific immunities/bonuses can also be gained from weapons that are situationally useful and should be taken advantage of.
In BG2 it's less clear cut because your fists start dealing an unholy amount of damage and you get loads of attacks. In BG:EE though they're generally your friend.

hmm thats a good idea
But as far as APR goes he gains 1/2 every 3 levels. So is that :
Yeah I decided to roll a monk despite the seemingly overwhelming disadvatages. Im level 6 now, and not half bad! Though most super-abilities are out of reach, you still feel like a monk. I use Greywolfs sword +2 for my main attacks, sling for ranged attacks, and the middle slot I keep for fists which I switch to when using stunning palm (which I use frequenlty).
I should mention that I maxed out the fighting stats to counterbalance the disadvatages of being a monk. Turned out a pretty balanced deal.
I like the idea of using a Monk as a Scout/Assassin. They move fast. They have Stealth. And they have a Stunning Attack and the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique from Kill Bill. Sneak up on your target and make his heart explode. You can call it "The Baconator" =3
Aww man, no more talking about the Baconator. I've only got like $40 to get me through the month so thinking about fast food is making me drool.
God I want a hamburger. *eats more ramen*
From one poor guy to another, potatoes are real cheap, and if you can manage to buy some grocery store bacon and cheese, you can get your grease and sodium fix with a nice baked potato with bacon bits.
Unfortunately in BG1 your monk should always be using weapons in addition to having the single weapon style fighting proficiency. Only time you should go fisticuffs is when you wanna use your stunning blow.
