No, I'm not advocating for 3ed. I'd love to play with the character development from IWD2 but that's not going to happen. What I am suggesting is some sort of increased flexibility with weapon proficiency slots. BG2 sort of did that with the "Sword and Shield" stuff but that seemed a bit lame. Even with that, characters eventually started taking semi-random proficiency slots when there wasn't much of a use for new ones.
We could draw inspiration from 3e feats. Dodge might provide an AC bonus if wearing only light armour. Combat Casting might provide a chance to keep a spell being cast if you take a hit. There must be lots of possibilities that don't disrupt the 2e framework. And it would make a change of pace to have parties who haven't all maxed out their weapon specialization.
