What was your first challenging fight for BG:EE

Just as the title states. For me, it was the crazy mage with the mustard jellies. While I know that fight isn't that difficult I try to rest as little as possible. I try to do 1 rest per map and know that the same map has a fight with another group of nasties to the north. I eventually broke down and had to rest for the fight, even then I ended up with 3 people poisoned and had to blow through all my healing spells and rest once again afterward.

Ettercaps. I just never remembered them being so challenging when I played the original BG way back, but they must have been. Or maybe I'm just a lot less prepared than I was before. Their poison does something ridiculous, like 50 damage over its course, and they're usually around web traps that immobilize half the party.

It was in the Black Pits. Five portals spawning monsters and an ogre mage.

In actual BGEE, the fight with Karoug the Greater Wolfwere. I had to use a bunch of potions because no one had proficiency in Bastard Sword and it and the dagger were the only things that could hurt him. Giant Strength, Speed, and Heroism I think I used, coupled with Wand of Paralyzation so I could hit.

A level 1 Dorn attempting to kill Greater Basilisks. He failed.

However with some other level 1 ranged support success was had.

Probably Shandalar, though part of the challenge is killing him before he Dim Doors outta there after chunking five sixths of your party. The fact he's pretty much lolimmune to everything except maybe Magic Missiles and Snares doesn't help.

I've cleared out the bandit camp (pretty much done with wilderness) just yesterday. Up till now, the game wasn't challenging at all :( Maybe I'm simply playing to cheesy. For instance, my charnamme archer and Imoen will pretty much interrupt every spell of a spellcaster in every encounter. Melee enemies barely manage to make a successful hit on my tanks.

Then again, I'm only in chapter 3. I hope the game picks up.

The inn Nashkel. That assassin was insanely tough for a low level group with very little (read no) magical gear, and no mage.

Believe it or not, I had quite a bit of trouble with Mulahey at the bottom of the Nashkel mines this go around. I was travelling with charname Fighter, Imoen, Xzar, montaron, Jaheira and Garrick since Khalid had earlier been turned into a human pin cushion at the Hobgoblin camp. Everyone was either level one or level 2. On the way to the bottom, Xzar was one shotted by a kobold archer, and Montaron met his demise when he failed to locate a trap.

Down to four people. when i made it to Mulaheys room, I realized I had no crowd control remaining, so I rushed past Mulaheys room and picked up Xan. I then sent Xan in to confront Mulahey and immediately charmed him to assist with the horde of kobolds that were swarming. Even with Mulahey's assistance, i still couldnt clear out all of the Skeletons and kobolds before charm wore off. A second charm attempt failed and Mulahey immediately held everyone except charname and Xan. I had Xan run to Mulaheys treasure chest and reclaim his moonblade since he was out of spells and charname and Xan wen to work on the remaining Koblolds and Skeletons. We wiped them out and Xan, near death made a heroic attempt to save jaheira from death but failed and both he and jaheira fell in battle. At this point, Imoen, near death retreated back a little bit and I sent Garrick forward to protect her. Garrick didnt last long and I was down to just charname and Imoen who managed to finish the battle, Imoen with just a single HP.

Its not usually that tough of a battle, but rushing there without many sidequests to level the party made it very intense and challenging and also reminded me why i love this game so much.

Davaeorn. Jerk and his bouncing lightning bolts completely stomped me the first time around.

Most difficult fight period is that stupid final enemy of the Soultaker quest chain. Freaking death gaze keeps murdering everyone. Think I have to leave and come back with potions of mirrored eyes.

Ekandor and his Ogre Berserker + Bodyguards at the end of Neera's questline.

That's pretty much everything up until now. I did have people die, but usually not more than one at once. There are, however, nasty fights coming up, I'll see what I can do about those. The mage with the jellies was not difficult, as I picked the right (or wrong, depending on how you see it) dialogue.

@The_New_Romance I found that one pretty tough as well. The individual enemies are not enormously tough but there are 5 of them and they make their saves against crowd-control spells with annoying regularity. That and the fact that all the melee ones make a beeline for the rather squishy quest NPC and don't get distracted by tanks easily.

@Corvino Absolutely, yes. I needed five or six attempts, because there were just so many variables involved. At first, the close combatants always got behind my front and messed everything up. Then I had one or two fights where everything was going fine until only the big bad red meanie was alive, who then managed to get off a Horror spell and decimate my whole group.

I believe it is easier if you only go there when everybody is around level 4, and I've found that Silence in combination with CC spells such as Web and Stinking Cloud works - if you get lucky. Also, the battle I actually won was the one where the
    Ogre Berserker
actually broke his weapon in his first swing. He went down nicely after being left with only his fists :P

Playing Core Rules with a party limited to 3 (most of the time). Trying never to die (not gaming the system -- just take the battles as they come). Nonetheless, I've died twice -- both could have been avoided with better play.

First and most truly unexpected death was Winter Wolf by Nashkel mines. The first "cold breath" killed me dead -- didn't realize it was that powerful. Always thought it would take at least 2 hits to kill me and played accordingly -- now, I'm more careful.

The fight against the jelly things on the 3rd level of Durlag's Tower... they kept spawning more and more unless you killed them at range.

I have been surprised by the variation of difficulty. Bassilus was cake (immediately dropped by Viconia's Command spell) and then Dorn gets killed by vampiric wolves.

Sendai's band was tougher than I remembered them.

You mean fission slimes? They can be only killed by fire - unless you use it, they'll just keep multiplying :)

I dont blame people having trouble with the fission slimes. They fixed the bug which prevented them from multiplying indefinitely if you didnt use fire.

The cleric/mage with the Basilisks - had it in hand until he cast fear and made my back line run into basilisks and be turned to stone.
