I don't know the answer, but, my experience with increasing path nodes was that it would increase the likelihood of the sixth npc in the party breaking off and going in the wrong direction to parts unknown, possibly drawing aggro and causing death. That's because the increased pathfinding would cause them to calculate a route all the way around the map every time another party member blocked the direct path, even for a split second.
I think it needs further tinkering. When a party member is blocked from the shortest route, he should pause much longer until the path is clear. This, along with more nodes would greatly improve full party movement.
because i remember shadows of amn had 400 000 with enhanced finding, and it was flawless, my guys are still having trouble getting around each other in fights, i will have 1 fighter be fighin' a baddie and the other to are picking their nose behind him because they cant get passed him

Pathfind still is WAY better than in vanilla BG1.
