When you have calmed Marl down and you are awarded 900xp, game says there should be a Journal entry to accompany this but there isn't.

I assume that there should be an entry in the Journal for completing this.

I also remember being able to kill him AFTER the fact for no rep loss, this is no longer the case.

Yeah, and that's not a bug.

why is a bug? You can kill tons of npc without rep loss, even other quest givers. Is it a bug to kill Zhurlong after quest for no rep loss? get thats gold he steals back and those nice boots you got for him?

So it's a bug because you arbitrarily say it's a bug?

Having a rep penalty for killing a peaceful Marl makes sense to me. The whole point of the Marl encounter is to make a role playing choice. Killing him in self defense is fine, but killing him after talking him down from fighting? Seems evil to me. From a game mechanics perspective, getting XP for being peaceful on top of XP for being hostile just cheapens the choice.

Why they changed this was probably just to shut down a loophole to keep early-game XP rewards balanced. Yeah, they could extend this philosophy to other NPCs like the one you mention. Maybe that's their plan, but in a game where you are allowed to kill just about everyone, some cases will probably be missed.

Off topic: the black and white mechanics of the reputation system really fail at times. Even though Zhurlong steals like 30g from you, does he deserve to die for that? By that I mean there's no penalty for killing him. I guess it goes both ways though, because the flaming fist are just as homicidal towards the player when he/she steals something worthless like a stack of arrows though.

Yes I completely agree with the it is okay to kill in defense, just like real life if necessary force, etc, just stated how it was before and how it is now, and how nothing else(or few others) follow this same thing. my example was Zhurlong.

The reason Zhurlong deserves to die is because 30gp translates into like 30000USD!! peasants made coppers in D&D would you let someone steal 30000$?? :P Also dem boots!

Only thing now (Devil's advocate) is if you "fix" everything, the way Marl was fixed playing evil is a lot less fun than it already is. Being evil already puts TONS of limits/restrictions, still have to follow a "good" storyline etc. It is nice being able to take that forced "good" frustration out on random npcs now and then with no repercussions.

You still can, there's no Rep loss for punching someone unconscious.
And if you do it efficiently enough (immediate moral failure), you can still pickpocket them.

Though I do admit, that's really only effective with a high STR, otherwise they turn hostile.

Knocking people out = less evil though! Some might even call it too good or too nice. :P

    @Woo
You get rep loss if you calmed him down then killed him, because the patrons see you as the aggressor.
If you kill him before he calmed down, you won't get rep loss because he is the aggressor then.
I said it is not a bug because this is what was actually implemented. Multiple people made concerted efforts to make it work like that.

I do agree, I just wondered if it was a bug, since I know I used to kill him after the quest for the extra 650 exp. Some npcs aren't cared about and you can kill them infront of others, I just figured he was one of them too. Some npcs you can even kill and the commoners/innkeepers wont even run/panic. :D

I just chatted with Marl at Feldepost's Inn in Beregost and went the diplomatic approach, with a round of ales in memory of his son netting 900 party XP. I got the status "Journal updated- Marl's Loss" but could not find this journal entry anywhere.
