Breaking weapons cause backups of the same type to disappear

The normal 2 handed sword I have Minsc using sometimes breaks but when it happens all other backup 2 handed swords I have either equipped in extra weapon slot or just in backpack disappear. There is only one broken item in my inventory despite 2 or 3 instances of 2 handed swords disappearing.
