Would BGEE saves work in BG2?

I hear BGEE is just a reversed engineered BG1, with BG2, so I imagine they would; as it stands I'm getting the second game and expansion regardless.
But I'm wondering if there's anything I'll lose, apart from a piece of my heart, by not transferring my level 8 monk with his golden pantaloons and completed Durlag's Tower. Or if I should just put him out of his never again to be played misery.
